So I’m knitting this scarf pattern I found online, and it has been going great so far, but I’ve reached a point where, for some reason, I’m missing a stitch. Its not dropped, I go down and search for a dropped stitch and can’t find one, I didn’t knit 2 together by accident. I unwind back down a couple of rows until the pattern is back to normal, then I slooooowly knit back up, taking great care to focus and count stitches, and by the time I get back up, its gone again. I’ve unraveled at least 5 times and I get going again, and each time, that stitch is missing from the exact same place in the exact same row. What in the world is going on? What am I doing wrong?
Pattern is RS knit 1 knit 1, yarn over, knit 3, DMD, knit 3, yarn over repeat - until last 2 stitches knit 2. WS knit 1, purl until last stitch knit 1.
DMD: slip stitch 2 as if to knit-2-together, knit 1, pass 2 slip stitches over the knit 1 to create double decrease.
Welcome to KH. What pattern are you using? Can you link to it, or what is the exact name and name of the designer? Seeing a photo of the intended scarf and your work would be very helpful. Right now I’m wondering if you’re missing a yo. I’ve not encountered the term DMD for this decrease, I’ve always known it as CDD or S2KP. It seems I come across something new every day.
Thank you!
It’s the Merengue Zig Zag wrap by Barry Klein on Ravelry. Mine doesn’t look much like it at all, I’m brand new to knitting. I didn’t know DMD isn’t a common term; I don’t know knitting terms in general (googling as I go and following videos I find).
I’m in the middle of another redo, trying to work back up to that spot again to see if maybe 6th times the charm.
I can’t see what’s wrong, all I can think of is missing yo’s. Is there one missing stitch or a stitch missing in each repeat? I think if it’s spread out it will look more like the pattern pictures. Are you using a heavier yarn than is called for? Your stitches look like they might be tight but otherwise they look good. For some reason the pattern page won’t open for me; the site might be experiencing difficulties.
As I’m no help I’m asking @salmonmac to come to the rescue.
Thanks for trying. It was just that one place, no other place had the missing stitch. Today I unwound it down to the end of the purple and tried again, and so far, it’s doing okay. So maybe I did miss something. As for the yarn, I definitely am using something different than the pattern called for, but its all I had. I’m trying to keep the stitches loose, as everything I’ve read in beginning to learn to knit says thats a common mistake is tight stitches.
I’ll update if I run into the problem again, but it seems to have resolved itself… for now… thank you so much tho!
I’ll keep my fingers crossed that it continues well. A lot of projects have been made with yarn that was “all I had.” Now we’re staying home a lot of us are digging into stash. Sometimes it doesn’t matter so much about the yarn - a scarf doesn’t need to fit after all - but if it’s thicker then you would want larger needles. That would make a big difference. Let the size of the needles determine your stitch size. It’s much easier than trying to maintain the same looseness on smaller needles. Your knitting really does look good!

Welcome to KnittingHelp!
You may be inadvertently forgetting a yarn over and that’s causing the missing stitch.
One question: How are you working the yarn overs? Between knit stitches, bring the yarn to the front between the needles, then over the right needle to the back to work the next stitch. That’s it.
It won’t use a stitch.
It may also help to use markers between repeats. The markers can be as simple as a circle of scrap yarn in a different color. Your repeats are 10sts. It’ll make it easier to find a missing stitch in the future.
Enjoy finishing up this lovely wrap!
