Ok, so, a while ago Michaels had signs up all over the yarn dept. that they were going to be remodeling the yarn section…uh…I see no difference at all. It looks like they moved some yarn to the back wall but that’s IT! Has anyone else noticed any significant changes at their local Michaels? I must say, I’m really disappointed, I was really looking forward to it!
Could be your store, but other people have said there’s more colors of Patons wool and other yarns, also that there’s a little more of the ‘natural’ yarn as well as Michaels own yarn brand. Maybe they’re just slow there…
You mean they’re done? :woohoo:
I’ll have to go and check it out!
I do hope there is a big improvement… I’d love to be able to stay in town to buy my yarn.
TEMA:knitting:
At least the one out here claims to be done. I thought for sure it would be re-arranged, more open and there would be a lot of new yarns, but, I saw nothing new today…There are a bunch of racks against one of the back walls and it looked like there was some yarn there now that wasn’t previously on the back wall, but other than that, nothing seemed to be changed. Their end cap displays were the same, their Lion Brand, Vanna’s Choice, Sugar n Cream, Caron’s, etc. yarns were all in the same place…I kept looking around to see if there were any signs indicating they weren’t done but all the signs were gone. The “changes” out here are nothing a sign should have been posted for, I was expecting a big change! I was really disappointed when I went there today…Of course I’ll still shop there and all but man, for what was supposedly done, there was no need for an announcement; they made it seem like some huge changes were going to take place! Maybe it’s just the Michaels out here, I dunno…lol…It was a bit of a let down though.
The one near me is like yours, Demonica. No new shelving or design, just some added things from their own line (which was just worsted acrylic-- nothing wrong with it, but not any different from 6 other major companies’ stuff), and it was hugely disappointing. However, there’s one about 40 miles from here that I rarely have occasion to visit (only if I’m going to see a relative out that way-- once a year or so), and they have always had literally 10 times the amount as my local one, so maybe there it will be more impressive.
I haven’t really noticed too much of a difference here either. Just some of their brand and maybe a few new colors of stuff they already had.
Same old Michael’s at both stores within driving distance for me. I prefer Hobby Lobby, anyway.
i noticed a few new yarns too, but nothing really got moved too much, peaches and cream is still in the 3rd aisle. it’s almost sad i know that :noway:
I was in my “local” (1 hr 15 min away) Michael’s this past Thursday and the amount of yarn has been halved. What used to take us two sides of one aisle is down to one side of an aisle. I was soooo diappointed. I guess I am going to have to order yarn online like I do everything else.
Not much of a change at my Michaels either. They introduced their own brand - which was nothing new in the way of acrylics - and reduced the choices of their natural and natural blend yarns. They mostly carry acrylic only now, along with some Patons Classic. There were some new colors in Homespun but that’s not a favorite of mine anyway. I’m always ordering online but then there’s so many choices that no one store is going to carry everything I’d like it to.
Mine said they were going to “remodel” this past spring. The sign is still up that says “Look for our newly remodeled yarn section this spring.” Nothing has changed. LOL.
Mine is all rearranged. They moved the yarn around and arranged it differently and there are lots of little tags that say “New Item!”. I saw the new yarn too – I love the colors the baby yarn has!
I didn’t buy anything, but it was fun to look at it all.
Some stuff was moved about.
I only noticed one (maybe two) new item, Patons Fisherman’s Wool. I hadn’t notice the Lily Sugar 'n Cream bins before (are they new?).
Still seemed like mostly worsted weight (4). They had wool, bamboo, and acrylic before. I’m not sure but I think the put-up weights are smaller now. Same price, less product. Yeah, that’s an improvement but only for them and the manufacturer.
Needle selection was still limited (even more limited in circ. sizes).
Over all I’d say small changes and big on the hype.
Still better than the crappy selection at Supper Wally World.
I’m thinking that quality and variety are inversely proportional to the size of the store. Counter intuitive but empirically proven in my experience.

The Fisherman’s wool is Lion; Patons wool is called Classic wool.
They should be getting in some baby yarns which are thinner than worsted, and hopefully not in baby pastelish colors.
 Oops. You are right; of course.
I did notice a more defined baby weight section (perhaps more area for it too).
I can’t say I saw any significant difference in color choices. I really don’t think I would look good in pastels, pink, yellow, or baby blue regardless of what item of clothing it was.
Has anyone tried the Impeccable yarn? Our Michaels got a bunch of it and it has really nice colors. I am thinking about possibly making something for my mom and sister from that yarn but I was wondering if anyone had tried it yet.
Hi, me too! I was interested in what it would look like. Being a former yarn owner of the LYS I was curious.
They only cleaned up the yarn part, condensed it and thats what they call the “new” yarn department?
Karen
Got rid of most of the furry fuzzy stuff though…

Oh, our local Mike’s had bins or crates in the large isle. They were removed and a couple potted trees were brought in for atmosphere.
Excuse me, but for yarn it should be pictures of four legged animals that say “baa.”
So long as they didn’t go with the “aroma therapy” that goes along with such animals.
:roflhard:
The Michael’s here is now the land of acrylic. Some cute colors but almost all synthetic fibers. And about half of the size of before–just one aisle.
I think we need some truth in labeling. How can yarn companies get away with calling something “Alpaca” or “Bamboo” when it contains less than 25% of said fiber?
