Measurements for sweater

I’m about to start my first adult sweater!

I’m having trouble figuring out which size to make. The pattern says for

S [M, L, XL, XXL]

the finished chest measurement will be 40 [43, 46.5, 49.5, 54.5]

So, my question is: how do I measure my husband’s chest? (right under his armpits? middle of the rib cage? should he have his arms up? inhale? exhale? etc…)

And, when I have his chest measurement, how do I decide which size to make? Should it be the closest match? Or do I want the sweater to be an inch or 2 bigger? Or even bigger, to allow for wearing it over a shirt?

Measure at the widest part of his chest. Have him lift his arms so you can get the tape measure under them, but then have him put them down for the measurement (unless he walks around like this all day: :cheering:) He can breathe normally.
If you want him to be able to wear a shirt underneath, you might want to go up a size.

So, if his chest measures, say, 41 inches, I would make the Medium, which is 43 inches?

yep, that’s what I would do.

I always suggest measuring a sweater that he likes the fit of.
