Meaning: work stitches as they present themselves?

this pattern is so simple I don’t get it.
its a cable pattern of six rows
R1 K4, pm, P1, * pm K6, pm, P1P repeat between the astericks 4 more times ending with pm, K4
R2-4 Work stiches as they present themselves while ransferring markers

Okay, what does that mean, at first i thought it just meant repeat the same thing until you get to r5 when the cable thing happens but I really need to purl everyother row , don’t I??? It doesn’t say anything about it but won’t get the pretty stockette cable thing, Right??? Help…

What they mean is to knit the knits and purl the purls as they face you. If you’re looking at a knit stitch, knit it. If you’re looking at a purl stitch, purl it. If you can’t see them well enough in the beginning, you’re basically working that particular stitch in the opposite way that you did the previous row.
