Well I guess we are entitled to change one’s mind. My 10 yr old granddaughter said she didn’t want to learn to knit and that was a week ago. But suddenly she wants to knit to make a blanket. So we are starting very basic. We went to craft store today and I let her pick out cotton yarn to make face cloth. It’s basic garter stitch nothing fancy. She really surprised me. I cast on and did 2 rows and then turned her loose. She had to have a few things corrected but I thought she really did good. She did about 4 rows before dinner and I had to correct maybe 4 times, like accidental yarnover. But she knew when something didn’t look right and that’s half the battle. So I’ll see if she carries on to completion
How exciting for you. I hope she will continue to knit. I too started very young. Picked it up, then put it down, then picked it up. Now I wish I knew all the fancy terminology that they put in the patterns. So different from years ago. I think sometimes school gets in their way, but keep on trying.
That’s great! It’s so nice of you to let her pick her yarn, one of the things that put me off as a child was the large cone of thin scratchy brown yarn my mum would always point me towards any time i said I’d like to knit. I’m sure she thought it was good enough for a practise but I hated it.
As your GD has said she’d like to make a blanket perhaps she can make a bunch of squares, some garter, some stockinette, some with knit purl pattern like basket weave or stripes of stockinette and reverse stockinette… and then sew them together. Each part is not too big and gives another practise at either the same stitch or a new challenge. There are those small charts with knit purl motifs too, she might like to pick one for a challenge.
@lynbuehler i think i agree about school getting in the way! Schools are so very academic now and don’t really give time or value to creative subjects and crafts.
