Making up the cardigan

I am a beginner knitter and have reached the point where I am stitching the sleeves to the body. My pattern states that I do the following: ‘Sew sleeve top into armhole, st by st with back stitch on right side of work, unpicking spare yarn as Sts are sewn into place’ I am very confused and any insight would be most welcome.

Welcome to KnittingHelp!

What is the name of your pattern and designer?

It sounds like there are live sleeve stitches on hold or on a line of waste yarn. As you pull out the waste yarn from each stitch, you sew that stitch down to the armhole edge. Knowing the pattern name and designer will help us.

Thank you for your reply, I am not sure of the name of the pattern as I downloaded it from Etsy. The watermark says Purl4fun.etsy.com 0-3mths Double Knitting. I think your explanation is what I’m meant to do, there are two rows of waste yarn added to the sleeves, so I will try what you suggested.

It may make it easier to unpick the waste yarn sts onto a needle first so that you’re in less danger of losing a stitch. It’s whatever is more comfortable for you. And of course you can always bind off the sleeve sts and seam them to the armhole that way. Let us know how it’s going.

You’re on the right track! The pattern wants you to sew the sleeve top into the armhole stitch by stitch using a backstitch on the right side of your work. As you go, remove the waste yarn so your stitches line up neatly. Those extra rows of waste yarn make it easier to match up the sleeve and body edges—just follow them as a guide.

Do you have a photo of the pattern picture? Or a link to the pattern on etsy?

Thanks, I have managed to join them now.
