I’ve made mittens and thought it would be fun to try finger gloves. I’m using a Patons pattern called Cable Detail Gloves and got as far as completing the index finger. From there, I’m stumped. Other patterns I’ve checked - and online instructional videos - generally mention starting from the pinkie finger and working back to the index finger. My question is “What next?” Please tell me how you would read the following: To make 1st finger: K14. Slip these sts onto length of yarn. K14. Cast on 2 sts. Divide these 16 sts onto 3 needles. Join in rnd. Knit in rnds until work from cast on rnd measures 2 1/2 inches. To make 2nd finger: Slip next 5 sts from length of yarn. Cast on 2 sts. Knit last 5 sts. Pick up and knit 2 sts at base of first finger. Divide these 14 sts onto 3 needles. Join in rnd. Knit in rnds until work from pick up rnd measures 2 3/4 inches. I’m particularly confused by the instructions for the 2nd finger, although ultimately I may have gotten off-track before I even started on the fingers.
Ravelry says Errata available. I clicked the link provided, I’m still looking for the errata.
You start by putting 14sts on scrap yarn. After you finish the first finger, knit 5sts from one.end of the scrap yarn, cast on 2 sts and then knit 5 sts from the other end of the scrap yarn and pick up sts from the base of finger one to complete the round. You’ll still have sts left on the scrap yarn (admittedly not very many). Does this make sense with the rest of the pattern? Can you see where the sts for the other fingers are coming from, perhaps held sts at another level of the hand?
Really lovely gloves, btw.
Thank you for your suggestions. I guess my next question, which should maybe have been my first, is “Has anyone out there actually knitted these gloves?” It seems I’m making this harder for myself than the project warrants. And I’m still not clear on the instruction “Knit last 5 sts”
You may well get an answer from someone who has knit theses gloves and that would be the most helpful.
When you put the 14sts onto the scrap yarn, there are 5sts at the beginning of the 14 and 5sts at the end of the 14 leaving 4 sts in the middle. It’ s those beginning and end sts that you want to work with for finger two.
Are you knitting these in the round?
it sounds so interesting… but i have not tried it yet… i will try to apply it first and then give you feedback…
I am working on gloves right now, After you have completed the first finger, you should have stitches on some waste yarn being held in waiting for the next finger to be knit. Pick up stitches the pattern says to pick up from the waste yarn, then cast on 2 stitches for the side gusset pick up the back half of stitches and pick up 2 stitches from the base of the first finger. Then knit in rounds till you have reached the length of the finger you need and do the decreases and fasten off. Repeat this process for the 3rd finger and the pinky finger. I taught a tutorial on making gloves on magic loop for Knitting Paradise forum last winter and the tutorial is still there but the pattern used is not , I would have to send it to you. It is a plain glove, no cables , can be knit in worsted weight or sock yarn.
If you are interested , just send me a private message here and I will reply the same way.
This is such a lovely, gracious offer. I hope it’s open to all? I sent you a PM, just in case it is. Thank you.
Sent the link to tutorial and the pattern Pdfs are on the way to your email in box.
Just let me know if you need to have something cleared up. I recommend reading all 12 pages of the tutorial. Post a picture of your gloves here when you finish them.
