Hi All, I recently completed my very first sweater. I love it but made some mistakes, one of which is my magic loop technique. As you can see in this pic, I got an ugly seam on the left sleeve! I have watched all the magic loop troubleshooting info and videos out there but still got this… Should I have used DPNs? My second sleeve that you can’t see in the pic looks better as I started knitting one stitch then ever so gently tightening the second one, as I saw in a youtube video. Any help appreciated. Thanks
.The choice of hardware is more about personal preference than what is better.
If you like magic loop then you will slowly improve, and as you have shown to us in the picture, you have already improved a lot. The same applies to DPNs. They too have a learning curve.
Personally I happen to prefer DPNs and I knit my sleeves with DPNs because it is my tool of choice. It is not because DPNs would be universally better for everyone, but just a preference choice I made.
Thank you… some who have made this sweater say the sleeves did better on DPNs but others have said magic loop!
Welcome to the forum!
It’s a lovely sweater, very nicely worked. Congrats on your first sweater.
Have you washed and blocked it yet? Wool and even acrylic will even out a bit with blocking. Check the ball band on your yarn to see the washing recommendations.
Thanks very much for posting the photo, too.
Hello! Yes, it’s been washed and blocked. It helped a lot of things but not this sleeve seam…
Thanks for your kind words!
There is another option. Use two circular needles like dpns instead of one long one for magic loop.
This avoids the magic loop or the inflexible dpns from stretching the stitches apart at the transition. The circulars have the thinner cord between points so you can more easily manage a smooth transition between needles.
That is a great idea and something I’ve not tried yet. Thanks!
