I am making a very cute dress the little one I am expecting. So far the pattern has been relitively easy to follow. I am now making the armholes (it is a tank-style dress) and I am completely lost! The directions say,
“Bind off 3 stitches at beginning of each armhole edge 1 [2, 1, 2] time(s). (52 [53, 58, 59] stitches)”
I at the beginning of this row I have 65 stitches (the ammount I am supposed to have!) And, the directions say binding off of armhole edge stitches is worked on right-side and wrong-side rows. Decreases are worked on right-side rows only.
I am knitting the second number (for the correct size) but I dont understand exactly what they are saying. Do they mean I need to bind off 3 stitches at the beginning of each row for the next 4 rows (to end up with the correct ammount of stitches) OR do they mean I need to bind off 6 stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows???
The pattern means to BO 3 sts at the beginning of the row for 2 rows. Which will give you 59 sts, not 53. Are you sure for the 2nd size you should have 65 sts at this point?
Thanks for the quick response! This is the section of my pattern just before up to the confusing part. And like I said before I am knitting the 2nd number for the correct size.
Work even in stockinette stitch (knit on right side, purl on wrong side) until piece measures 4" [4", 41/2", 41/2"] (10cm [10cm, 11.5cm, 11.5cm]) from beginning of stockinette stitch, ending with a wrong-side row.
Shape Armhole
Note: In the following rows of armhole shaping, binding off of armhole edge stitches is worked on right-side and wrong-side rows. Decreases are worked on right-side rows only.
Continue in stockinette stitch, binding off 4 stitches at beginning of each armhole edge 0 [0, 1, 1] time(s). (58 [65, 64, 71] stitches)
Bind off 3 stitches at beginning of each armhole edge 1 [2, 1, 2] time(s). (52 [53, 58, 59] stitches)
Okay, it’s just not written clearly enough. You would BO 3 sts at the beginning of the next 4 rows which will dec 12 sts. Which is a lot easier and clearer to write than saying at the beginning of each armhole edge twice. Weird…
“Bind off 3 stitches at beginning of each armhole edge 1 [2, 1, 2] time(s). (52 [53, 58, 59] stitches)”
I at the beginning of this row I have 65 stitches
As you are ready to begin the bind offs you have 65 stitches. You are going to bind off 3 stitches at the beginning of each armhole edge twice. There are 2 armhole edges and binding off 3 stitches on each armhole twice will involve 12 stitches. 65-12=53 which is what it says for your size.
Note: In the following rows of armhole shaping, binding off of armhole edge stitches is worked on right-side and wrong-side rows.
The bind offs will be at the beginning of the armhole edges over the next 4 rows.
When I started writing this I only saw 2 posts on this thread, then I scrolled up and there were 2 more. They must have been there when I started to write, but somehow I didn’t see them. :?? I think you have this solved, but I will go ahead and post what I had written.
