I’m trying to knit a Harry Potter scarf exactly like the movie but when I find the the company that makes the scarves (Lochaven of Scotland), their scarves look like Stockinette on both sides and don’t curl in! They don’t look like they’re knitted in the round either, their scarves are flat and single.
Is it possible knit like that? Help, knowledge and advice is greatly appreciated!
That looks like double knitting to me. You could double knit it or knit in the round with a slipped stitch on each side for a fold line. This method Knitting in The Round Straight would work too.
Thank you for replying! I’ve looked into the knitting in the round and double knitting but with those techniques, the scarf would be tube like. You would be able to grab both sides, pull them apart, and see that there’s space in the middle. I can’t do that with this particular scarf, it is only one layer. I’m wondering if this just can’t be knitted and that they’re made by machine. I am a new at knitting, I could be wrong. Is there a way to double knit or knit in the round without that space in the middle? Or is there another way to make a reversible knit, like this scarf?
Yes, looks like double knitting.
But if you say it isn’t, how about brioche/fisherman’s rib?
Assuming it’s made on a machine, you won’t be able to duplicate it exactly. If you need [I]that[/I] scarf made [I]that[/I] way I’m afraid you’ll have to buy one as duplicating it by hand is highly unlikely. There are lots of HP scarf patterns around, you might see how they’re made.
Brioche would do it, I agree. How about plain old k1p1 rib?
I’ve also successfully knit a HP scarf in stockinette in the round and it was much less tedious than double knitting. It’s warm and it lies flat because the ends are flattened with the tassels.

There’s a way to double-knit without making a tube…I usually d it by accident! When you want to make a tube, it’s knit one, slip one with yarn in front, etc. If you forget and slip with the yarn in back, and you don’t straighten it out when you turn the work around, it hooks the two sides together. If you’re doing that on purpose, you can just pick up the float and knit it with the stitch it’s in front of (or to hide it, shove it to the back and knit it.)
