Hi all , I hope someone can help me. I plan to either crochet or knit a little crown for my first grandchild. A clerk at Joann mentioned that I could carry some golden thread along my yarn to give it a little sparkle. I googled this and found a tutorial of a guy doing just this. Though he used two strands of sewing thread along with his yarn to make it more noticeable. But I have a few questions. One is sewing thread really the best thing to use? It doesn’t seem to have the same give that yarn has. Wouldn’t it break when trying to put on babies head? What would you recommend I use. I’m using Caron simply soft and want to add just a subtle touch of gold. So whatever I use has to be much thinner then the simply soft. Oh yes and it also can’t be wool. I am sadly allergic to wool. Thanks for your help.
Looking for advice about knitting with sewing thread and yard combined
There are lots of different types of gold threads, if you have a supplier you can go and look and feel some threads that would probably be the best option. If it was me I’d choose something online though, I don’t know any great yarn and thread shops locally but I see one of the online shops I use has a few different options (wool warehouse).
I love embroidery threads for various things, maybe that would be an option?

When you knit or crochet you put in some stretch into the project even when the yarn or thread doesn’t have any. For instance I have knitted with DK cotton and there is zero give if I just pull the yarn but once knitted it has enough elasticity to get a fitted top on and off. It will depend more on the stitch rather than the yarn or thread I think. A super stretchy cast on and a stretchy stitch pattern should do it.
You could try a swatch first to check you get as much stretch as you want.
Hope we get to see this crown it sounds super sweet!
Thank you so much. Sadly the only shop near me is Joann. May I ask you another question. Pearl cotton has the sheen I’m looking for. Although it may be a tad thicker then I want. BUT, am I wrong to assume that mixing cotton with Caron simply soft is not a good idea. The crown will be washed, so won’t the cotton shrink?
I don’t think the cotton will shrink so long as you follow the care instructions on the band.
Something like this?

Or is it a different brand?
This one is washable to 60 degrees and another I saw was up to 95 degrees. I don’t think you would need to wash at those high temperatures.
Perhaps if you have your eye on a thread you like you should go for it and buy some. Then do a decent sized sample swatch with both yarn and thread together to see how you like it. And then wash and dry following a wash routine which is suitable for both yarns/threads and see how it turns out.
I like those cotton threads the sheen is lovely and they are smooth, nicer than some metallic threads for near baby skin.
By the way congratulations, how lovely to have a first grandchild!
Welcome to the forum!
There’s also yarn to carry along like Plymouth Yarn Gold Rush or Loops and Threads Soft and Shiny.
A gold crown is the perfect choice for a treasured grandchild. Congratulations!
Thank you so much. And I think I will do a sample and wash it.
Thank you so much. I just reached out to DMC they have a Diamanté thread. But I’m unsure of the size. I just quickly crocheted some DMC pearl size 8 (wrong color) with my Caron simply soft to see if the size 8 would work. But it’s slightly too big making the thread more pronounced then I want. We shall see what they say. Thanks again for your help.
If its this one it’s a size 5

Don’t know if that’s it and helps or not.
For those interested I need up with Aunt Lydia’s metallic 10 in gold. Again, thanks for your help.
