Longtail cast on in the middle of a row

I posted yesterday about stitch markers and received wonderful help. So, I thought I’d try again today!

I’m working on the same pattern that I was working on yesterday (http://members.home.nl/tdpj/Patronen/Bootees/Saartjes%20bootees.pdf), and have been stuck at row 25 all day. I can’t figure out how I am supposed to do a longtail cast on in the middle of a row, and how I am supposed to be able to use a second strand of yarn as the thumb strand. I’ve been searching around the internet for help, and it seems that other people have had the same problem with this pattern, but that there is a way to do it as indicated by the pattern. I just can’t seem to get it to work . . .

Thank you so much for any advice!

seems like I had the same problem and I used the single CO or the cable co. Watch the videohttp://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/cast-on

Ya know, when I first ready your post I thought you can’t do a long tail cast on like that. I have that pattern saved to do someday but obviously have never read thru it all the way; did not realize that is exactly what it says to do.

By no means am I a long tail cast on expert, I rarely use it. I would probably use a cable or knit cast on.

Thanks so much for your help! I ended up doing a single cast on for the right strap. So, I am wondering now about the left strap. I could do a longtail cast on for that strap, but would it be uneven if I did so (since the longtail cast on creates a knit row)? Should I use a single cast on for the left strap, too?

I’m sorry if this is late, but I did my best.

When I saw this post, I started working on it immediately and have made a film to illustrate row 25, how to cast on.

I hope it’s useful.

Oh, I noticed, in the video, it says “knit 10”, … maybe I should have put “after having knit 10”.

Usually I just do a knit or cable cast on instead of the LT which I use to start things. But if you use another strand of yarn you can also do a LT CO in the middle of your knitting. Extra ends to weave in though…

I think it was not very clear how to cast on for the other strap, with two strands, so I made another video.

I also show reverse cast on, which makes purls instead of knits. I use that for double knitting cast on (alternating 1 normal and 1 reverse)
