Has anyone tried the Lion Brand Fisherman’s yarn? I just made a hat from this in oatmeal and seems like the dye ran a little when washed. They have dye lots although they look like natural shades. I am wondering if this will happen with the three skeins of oak tweed I got for a vest. It is two plies of white with a brown one and hopefully the dye won’t run. I love the yarn and the price. Also making a scarf from the brown. Does this wear well for socks?
I’ve only used the original/naural color so never had dye issues.
I wouildn’t use it for socks, myself. It sure will make a bulky sock if that’s what you want. If you do make socks, I’d add in reinforcing thread at heels/toes. I don’t like using yarn for socks that doesn’t have elastic, nylon or something in it to make the heels/toes stronger.
I don’t think this yarn is dyed, it’s supposed to be natural sheep colors.
You can use it for socks, go down to a 4 or 5 needle, and use the nylon thread in the heels and toes. But they will be a bit thicker than socks from sock yarn.
I wouldnt use it for socks at all…even if you hand wash them.
This is a felting yarn, It will felt when you walk on them. been there done that. My husband wanted 100% wool socks for winter, made them from this. Its just a big felted pair of socks now.
Ive never used any of this with a dye either. sorry cant be much help here.
I used Fishermans wool for a tote bag and felted it. It did not run and felted nicely. Good luck!
I intentionally felted a pair of Lion Wool socks and love them. Very warm.

I have bought two skeins of the natural brown and need to get more. I want to make a cardigan from it.
I wish it were also offered in a black or gray natural wool.
At Hobby Lobby it sales for about $8.50 and just under $9.00 at the Hancock’s fabric store in my area. I always use their 40% off coupon. From what I have read on Ravelry this is a good yarn, especially for the price.
I’m using it to make some thick socks for my husband and father in law for Christmas. So far I’m loving it.
I think it does come in a gray, check around.
Thanks for all the info. I love the Classica coat although it is probably not something I would wear - I wear pretty casual clothes. But I think it would be beautiful for you Art Lady from what I have seen of your other projects. If the yarn is supposed to be natural shades I wonder why they have dye lots. Possibly the skein I washed was dusty from the store, who knows. Anyway the scarf looks really nice so far (half finished) and I am going to make a vest with the tweed one and use caribou antler buttons. Price at JoAnns’ here is $9 for the 8 oz. skein and the 40% off coupon is nice.

Fisherman’s wool is not dyed. maybe a color in your other clothes dyed the yarn. i have made socks and mittens in this wool and it is great 
I haven’t had any issues with dye running. This is 100% wool and is meant to be handwashed. My daughter and I used it last winter to use as a natural diaper cover for cloth diapers. It allows the bum to breathe and is pretty waterproof, especially if you wash it in a lanolin wash. We make our own with lanolin from a pharmacy for nursing mothers combined with baby shampoo. This must be handwashed and air dried. The pants from last year are still wide enough to fit my granddaughter. But the pants length is about five inches too short. She’s grown a lot. Still, she insists on wearing them. It’s her favorite pair. We will be undoing the knot at the hem and lengthening the pants soon.
