Leg Warmers- Help

Hi,

I’m making some rib stitch leg warmers. I don’t usually modify patterns but am trying to make it work with what I have. This is my first project knitting in the round. :slightly_smiling_face: I have a question for the experts:
How should I decrease slightly so it fits fairly snug on the leg? I am thinking I will need to decrease at the bottom of the calf.
I’m using: 5 Bulky yarn on 16” circular needles size US 8. I cast on 72 stitches, 1x1 ribbing for about an inch, then 2x2 ribbing. Here’s a photo of what I have so far, on my leg just under my knee. How can I decrease evenly so the 2x2 pattern remains? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:Thank you! :yarn:

You could try decreasing in the purl sts. It’ll change the rib sequence but it won’t be so noticeable.
Going to a smaller needle size would also tighten up the leg warmer and without changing the 2x2 rib.

Leg warmers sound like such a good idea right about now!

Thank you, salmonmac! I will get some smaller circular needles! Then I think I will decrease some purls after it’s reached past the calf. Would you recommend purling two together or a different decrease? And, do you think I should decrease two purls to one twice, (day- one at the start of my row and another evenly across from it)? Sorry for all the questions- I’m not great at straying from patterns! :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Purl 2 tog works well.
How frequently to work the decreases depends on how much tapering you want and how quickly. You could dec at the beginning and end of the round as you suggest or dec every other purl column or something else. You could even continue the dec at the beginning and end of round as a line of decreases.
You may want to play around with this. You’re the designer now. Have fun!

:raised_hands: Thank you, salmonmac!! Your tips are wonderful! Happy knitting!
