So I have a basket full of left over yarn from projects, half of it I don’t even know the weight or the type. What can I do with it? I was going to make squares and then sew 'em together for a blanket but I don’t even have enough to make squares the same size.
Any ideas?
I don’t really understand what that mitred square thing is???
Jan, those are all great, but looks like the yarn is worsted or at least the same weight. Do you think I can mix weights? If so do I change needle sizes or just keep going on the same needles when I change yarns with different weights?
Ps. I have really been into selling my stuff, I know a bunch of you warned me against it, but it is nice to make some extra money on the side every now and then from something that I made. I even did 2 craft sales this winter.
Cool! If you actually make a bit of money and enjoy it, that’s wonderful! I’m very pleased for you. :yay:
What concerns me about your mixing yarns is that you said you don’t know the type. Some might have different care requirements than others depending on fiber content and mixing them could maybe be a problem. You could try doing two strands of the same or different colors to help even out the thinner yarns to better match the thicker ones. If you go to youtube and look for how to knit a mitered square you’ll get a number of videos to choose from. My data speed has been throttled or I’d look it up for you.
I think using different weights and needle sizes would make a really cool looking scarf or cowl. You’d just have to hand wash if it’s possible there is yarn that would felt. I would switch needle sizes myself.
Thanks so much! Just tried one of those patterns from Ravelry for mitred squares and now that I’ve made one I understand it. I originally was going to do a pattern that started with 3 stitches and increases but then I switched and did one where you decrease (which makes more sense IMO) so now I know how to make them and I will deff be making more.
I know I have super bulky acrylic (my fav yarn) I have quite a bit of that. I’ll try and match up the ones that I know for sure.
It is harder, but since you start with 3 and increase you can make it as big as you want. With the other method you cast on a lot the decrease so you might run out of yarn before it’s square. It can be done, but with bits of leftover yarn it may be hard to figure out how many to cast on before you run out. Of course you can make them multiple colors which would be awesome and that method would probably be fine.
