Left handed pattern help! Cr3L and Cr3R (Rowan Skibo)

Hi everyone,

I’m wondering if you can help!

I’m knitting a poncho, Martin Storey Skibo a Rowan pattern.

I’m left handed and the bit where I am reading the chart hasn’t turned out as I thought it would! I wonder if anyone knows what I’ve done wrong.

I’ve read the chart left to right (from end to beg) - firstly is this right?

The pattern looks fine EXCEPT when I’ve done the Cr3L and Cr3R. My question is am I supposed to have done them the other way because I’m left-handed? IE should I have swapped each Cr3L for a Cr3R?

I’ve attached a photo of what it should look like, and how my knitting has turned out so far and also the chart.

Thanks so much!

Emma

I think I’m supposed to have read the pattern right to left (beg to end) in spite of being left handed….hmm. May have just answered my own question!

Welcome to KH!
Ok, give that a try. A Cr3L should have 2sts crossing over and moving up and to the left. A Cr3R have 2sts crossing up and to the right.

Do you mean that you knit left handed, i.e. using your left needle as the working needle and moving the stitches from right to left as you process them?

I believe in that case you would need to do something different with the chart – I think you would need to mirror it, but don’t quote me on that because I haven’t done it myself.

If you start with your stitches on the left needle and move the stitches to the right needle as you process them (standard direction of working), then you read the chart from right to left regardless of which hand is dominant.

Could be a good idea to make a swatch of just the cable portion of the pattern in a smooth yarn so you can see what you are doing more easily and don’t have to pull back your main knitting if you make a mistake.

Also, as you are knitting from the top down, make sure your knitting and the chart are pointing in the same direction when you compare them. (In the photo, you have you your knitting oriented “as worn” rather than aligning with the direction of the chart.)

Good luck!

Super helpful thank you!

I’ve knitted the chart section and worked out where I’ve gone wrong.

All sorted!
