Left front border: buttonholes

This pattern is for little big stripey hoody king Cole pattern. I’m working on the left front border where the buttonholes are. I’ve never done buttonholes before and a tad confused how to do it.

I’ve picked up 49 stitches along the edge. Worked 4 rows of 1 x1 rib starting with p1, k1 row.

Next row: rib 4, cast off 1 st, (rib 8, cast of 1 st) x 4, then rib 3.

Next row: rib 4, cast on 1st, (rib 9, cast on 1st) x 4, rib 4

Work 4 more rows in 1 x 1 rib

What would be the neatest way of doing the buttonholes…I’ve tried several times and each time it looks wrong and I’m getting fed up of unravelling it and somehow lost a stitch so going to have to redo it all.

Any help would be good thankyou!

There are more complicated and neater buttonholes but for a one stitch buttonhole, the directions for cast off one stitch and then cast on one stitch on the next row should work fine. Remember that you have to knit 2 sts to cast off one.
The other buttonhole you could try is a yarn over, k2tog which is also simple and works well for a one stitch buttonhole.

So I would knit two together for one row, then would you say kfb would be an ok increase for the second row? because it doesn’t specify it just says cast on, cast off

This type of buttonhole all happens in one row. The yarn over makes the hole and the k2tog keeps the stitch count the same. So yo and then immediately k2tog.
