Lace work

I’ve been fooling around with a very, very simple lace pattern and I’m not particularly happy with the results. The whole thing seems to be too loose, open to look really nice.

Using size 9 needles and Knitpicks alpaca cloud, lace weight yarn.

The pattern goes:

CO 22 stitches
R 1-5, k all stitches.
R 6 K1, *k2tog, yo, repeat from * to last stitch, k1.

Repeat Rows 1-6 for length of scarf.

The rows of knit look really loose and uneven and the yo’s don’t seem to be making a clean eyelet.

I’ve gone to a couple of sites and appear to be doing the yo right, but I’m just not happy.

Is this a matter of practice or tension? The whole thing look sloppy. I’ve thought maybe I should just finish a swatch and then block it to see how it looks. Would that make a really big difference?

I also didn’t quite get gauge with the 9 needles but thought if I went a size up it would really look sloppy.

Some advice from lace knitters, please. (I’m not thrilled with the edges either.) Should I look for a lace knitting class. I didn’t think it would be this tough.

I have learned all about lifelines, tho’ so it hasn’t been a complete loss!!

Try using a size 8 or 7 needle…

9 strikes me as too big for that weight yarn, too.

well, I thought so too, but the gauge is running small on the size 9’s.

Don’t discount the miracle of blocking lace!
