Lace pattern chart

Hello there,
I hope you can help me…I started knitting again after many years. I know the basics but never followed a lace pattern. I am trying to follow the scarf pattern taken from Knitty.com

http://knitty.com/ISSUEspring05/PATTbranchingout.html

My problem, starting from the first row below, is that I end up with stiches on my left needle and don’t know what to do with them. In fact if the yo is just bringing the yarn forward without executing any stich from my left needle I get just 19 stiches done. I am doing something wrong for sure…

Thanks for you help!
Vera

Did you read the pattern notes? It says there are six sitches not on the chart… the three stitch garter-stitch border on either side.

Hello,
Thanks for your reply.
I’ve read the pattern and I’ve done the 3 stich garter stich border on each side but still end up with extra stiches. I am wondering if I’m doing the yo correctly. Do I need to bring the yarn forward and knit a stich when it says to yo?

Thanks!

YO on a chart is to just bring the yarn forward. Then you do whatever the next stitch is. In this case it’s knit, so you’ll automatically get the YO increase.

Are you doing the ssk in the beginning and and k2tog at the end?

All I can really suggest is that you look at the stitches on the needle and count them along with the chart. If you’re getting stitches left on the needle on the first row, it’s not the fault of the yo’s since they don’t use any stitches.

For a yarn over, you bring the yarn between the needles from back to front, then back over the top of the right needle so that you’ve made a loop on your right needle that’s not attached to anything at the bottom.

What you do on the next stitch depends on that stitch’s instructions. It’s always knit a stitch in the row you give, except for the last, which is a decrease.

So… you cast on 25 stitches.

Knit three for your garter stitch border, (22 left needle, 3 right needle)
Work two stitches into one (20 left, 4 right)

Yarn over (20 left, 5 right)
Knit five (15 left, 10 right)

Yarn over (15 left, 11 right)
Knit one (14 left, 12 right)

Yarn over (14 left, 13 right)
Knit one (13 left, 14 right)

Yarn over (13 left, 15 right)
Knit one (12 left, 16 right)

Yarn over (12 left, 17 right)
Knit one (11 left, 18 right)

Yarn over (11 left, 19 right)
Knit one (10 left, 20 right)

Yarn over (10 left, 21 right)
Knit five (5 left, 26 right)

Yarn over (5 left, 27 right)
Combine two into one (3 left, 28 right)

Knit three (0 left, 31 right)

When you knit a stitch after the yo, the yarn goes back over the needle as you knit it, but either way is correct.

I wasn’t correcting you  I wouldn’t dare! I just happened to be typing my explanation and you snuck in a post before me!

I didn’t take it as a correction, and lord knows I’ve needed correction from time to time, but I told Cristy on another post that this is how I do a YO from a knit to a knit and she got confused. I just wanted to point out that there are two ways to do it correctly!

And good lord, if you think I’m saying something wrong, DON’T be afraid to point it out! I’m certainly capable of making mistakes! :rofling:

Thanks so much for your help

After your explanations everything seams clear now. My mistake was to cast 25 stiches + 6 for the garter border to make a total of 31 stiches. As they are not shown on the chart I thought I had to add them on since the beginning!

I did, too.
