Lace making

I have recently bought a lace making kit from a charity shop with bobbins any idea how to start and what sort of yarn to use? I believe it is cotton yarn but not too sure about the thickness. It would be to eventually do bracelets. Thank you for your time!

Does the lace making kit have a name or source and is it used with knitting needles? Are there instructions for a pattern or any recommendations for yarn weight?
If the kit came with yarn, you can get a general idea of the yarn weight by working wraps per inch.

I think you may have bought a bobbin lace kit. Traditional bobbin lace is usually done with cotton thread. The size of thread will depend on the size of the project.
Search for bobbin lace on you tube.

Thank you for your answers. I have attached a couple of pictures of the kit. It is made by dryad, there is not much indication on the thread used only that the cotton bobbin inside it. I suppose I could try with thicker cotton perhaps to learn how to move the bobbins as this is rather new to me.

Thank you for the information. Yes, Spot’s correct, a bobbin lace kit.
Here’s a video that may help you get started.

Working with thicker thread in the beginning will make it easier. I’ve never tried this myself. Let us know how this adventure is going!

Ive always wanted to try this. But I have way too many hobbies. I decided to leave this be & admire it from afar. I would love to see your progress.

I am no help but wanted to cheer you on. I will look, out for your updates.
In a previous life I ran a department that had an amazing lace maker, sooo talented, and she and her students produced unbelievable lace. I had no clue as to the wizardry involved and felt very stressed out by all the bobbins hanging as I had a permanent fear they would get mixed up or tangled. The owners of the work had no such fear, they knew exactly what they were doing. Amazing and admirable.

I so love bobbins lace but same as you Creations would never be able to manage it. I did crochet version of bruges lace before not bobbins and quite enjoy doing it.
Good luck Celine2

I had to look up brudges lace to know what it was. I also made lots of pieces like that in crochet when I couldn’t move enough to knit and needed something to do. Mine looks like bits of torn old dishcloth. I doubt those pieces will ever get joined together to make the top I hoped for and even if they did it would still look like an scabby old dish rag… this is not in my skill set!
I just look on wide eyed and open mouthed at the beauty others can create.

This is what i mean by bruges lice crochet version.
Celine2 you always can swich on crochet if bobbins will not work.

Amazing.
…but I feel faint looking at the intricacy and difficulty of this!

Not a big deal Creations just making ribon of 4 dc back and forth and keep connecting with chains to previous rows. This pattern I brought with me 30 years ago from magazine. Made couple peaces during years as gifts. Try it. I dare you haha (maybe u fall for it)

It’s so delicate and beautiful. You make it sound easy and I’m sure it’s not!

Thank you but it is easier than you all think. You need just to follow sheme. I never could follow written pattern in knitting it confuses me, but in this you see whole thing and follow rows that you see in grapfic. If i make any sense
