KPK into next stitch without a hole?

Hi! I am following a pattern which uses the increase “KPK into next stitch.” I’ve worked out how to make this (this is the first part of the Trinity stitch) but now I have big hole under each increase, which is not exactly what I expected. The pattern says nothing about it but I am pretty sure there shouldn’t be any holes in it! (It’s not a pretty scarf…)

So, two questions: 1) is there a way to knit the P step of the KPK with the stitch below, so the increase doesn’t dig a hole? I’ve tried to purl the “P” stitch and the stitch below together, but it’s so tight that I can’t knit the last “K” stitch, and anyway I’m not sure it’ll look nice; 2) is there another way to make a symmetrical x3 increase that doesn’t create holes?

When I tried this pattern I did it an odd way: after pulling through the knit, I immediately wrapped the purl and pulled through, ditto for the knit, and got a similar result. Have you checked out the videos here? And are you sure the pattern as written won’t produce the appearance of a small hole in your wool and needles?

Yes, I’ve checked the videos here—actually, I learned the basics of knitting on this website!

And yes, I’m pretty sure that one doesn’t want holes in earflaps, the point of them being to protect one’s ears from cold and wind. Here is the pattern: http://cache.lionbrand.com/patterns/60461.html

What do you think? Is it a design mistake in the pattern? Or did I miss some crucial instruction to avoid or repair the holes in the earflaps?

:aww: Hi I asked the same question awhile back…can’t seem to find it here on the forum, but go to Knitty Gritty on DIY and search for Trinity Stitch…there is a video on it…might have to do some looking Cheley

Here it is:

Ah, yes, it explains well how to do the trinity stitch but… my pattern does not use the trinity stitch, only the first part of it (KPK into next st). If I understood well, the second part of the trinity stitch (P3tog) decreases the increase make by the first part (KPK into st) in the preceding row, so that the number of stitches remains the same in all the work. What my patterns wants to do is it make a symmetric increase of 3 (edit: 2) stitches.

Actually, I wonder if I shouldn’t substitute one standard increase at the beginning, a second in the middle, and a third in the end of the row to the KPK thing.

 that would be a question for someone else…

That’s only an increase of two sts, making 3 sts where there was 1 before. If the pattern has you doing a double inc in one spot it’s for the shaping, to make a V. If you do the incs at the edges it won’t look the same. You could try doing this - in the st before the center one (that you would do the kpk in) work a kfb, then kfb in the center st. That gives you the center st with the two new sts on either side of it - essentially how the original pattern is shaped.

I’m going to try this. Thank you very much Suzeeq!

or you could try using k,yo,k into a single stitch. Don’t panic until you try it, the YO doesn’t make a hole in this instance. And since you are only knitting two stitches into the one instead of three 0- it doesn’t stretch the stitch out as much.
