Knotted ball of yarn/new row

I am a beginner knitter doing a baby blanket with circular needles and a garter stitch. Last night I had a giant knot that prevented me from finishing the row I was on— I had to cut the yarn even though I was about 10 stitches from the end of a row.

My question is: is it okay for me to tie on a new ball even though I ended mid row, or do I have to undo all the rest of the row I didn’t finish ( that could be a problem for me because I’m very new to this.) I just know that my knitting teacher told me to try never to start a new ball in the middle of a row…I tried not to but the knot was gigantic and I couldn’t get it undone.

Any ideas?

By all means, DON’T undo all your hard work just to join a “new ball” of yarn.

While it IS a good rule of thumb to not INTENTIONALLY join yarn in the middle of rows, sometimes it will just happen that you HAVE to.

Here are some yarn joining methods that may work well for you, depending on what type yarn you are using…
Knit-in join (easiest)

Felted join (for wool yarn)

Russian Join (less bulky)

Thank you!! That relieves my mind. The knit in join looks easy enough!

I find that an easy way to join yarn is to actually do it this way, which is in my blog:

Using this method, you can join yarn almost seamlessly, like the title indicates.

Someone said she’d had this knot come loose in the wash. I guess you’ve not had that happen.

No GG, I haven’t had that happen. I guess its not as good as I thought.

I’ve used it but haven’t washed things enough yet to really test it. When I read that, I decided to skip it from now on…better safe than sorry. I went back to the knit a couple sts with both yarns since mostly I don’t use feltable yarns. If you’re having success with it, that’s great. I guess I thought I should mention it just in case.
