Please forgive me if it sounds like I don’t know what I’m talking about. It’s only because I don’t!
I downloaded a gorgeous new shawl pattern today, only to find out that it needs 60-inch size 13 needles. Which are just about impossible to find, except for Addi’s (cable is way too stiff for my poor wrists) and Chiaogoo red lace needles (way too pointy). :grrr:
But tonight I happened across a web page at http://www.socknitters.com/Tips/circulars.htm that talks about knitting with two circulars to use for LARGE projects - like my huge shawl. Only I can’t quite wrap my brain around it. :??
I’ve e-mailed the author, but in the meantime, can anyone help me understand what she’s talking about? It sounds SO intriguing, I want and NEED to learn how to do this!!! (UPDATE: E-mail to the author was returned as undeliverable. Help!!)
some of the instcutions say for small diameter, but then do the exact same thing as other instructions that say for small or large, so i guess i’d look at all of them if you have time, and see if a cohesive pictures forms for you.
It is a neat idea and if you have two size 13 circulars you can work the shawl on them. It’s similar to knitting in the round as shown on the videos that Xtopher linked to but don’t join the sts to knit a tube.
Knit one half of the shawl sts with both ends of needle one and when finished, drop needle one and pick up both ends of needle two and knit those sts, turn and knit back on the same sts, then drop needle two and pick up both ends of needle one again. The important thing to remember is not to knit the sts from needle one onto needle two or vice versa.
You can try it out with a small number of sts before you start your project if you want to be sure of how it works.
Thanks to all who replied & sent links. They help, but I really think I’m just going to have to sit down and actually try it to understand how it works.
Just FYI, the shawl pattern I referenced is at Patterns | Craftsy . Looks SO cuddly and warm, and if it will actually stay on my shoulders, it’ll be a winner!
I was tired of working on just one project; I need to scare up both pair of size 13 circulars (one Dreamz pair and one pair from the Boye interchangeable kit) and some leftover Homespun tonight, and stretch my brain! :knitting:
