Knitting with super thick fuzzy yarn + medium yarn in one project

Hello hello! I’m fairly new to knitting (but pumping the projects out!). I bought a lovely shaggy teddy yarn that is the thickest I’ve ever worked with - had to get 12mm needles. I would love to use it as a fur-type trim for a pair of legwarmers or on the end sleeves of a sweater. However, I have absolutely no clue how I would be able to switch from this extremely bulky, shaggy yarn to a medium/worsted yarn (using 5-6mm needles) for the rest of the project. I tried looking into some Youtube videos, but I am struggling to find recommendations for this type of yarn that is so thick and fuzzy. Wondering if anyone on here has tips or suggestions! Thanks in advance :star_struck:

You could knit the cuffs separately and hand sew them on using a smooth yarn and a stretchy stitching method. One thought is to knit the cuff so it is a thin strip to be attached horizontally. That way you just knit until you have the right length, rather than worrying about casting on the right number of stitches.

Otherwise, you will need to change your stitch count when you go from thick to thin or vice versa. Just start knitting with the new yarn and new needle size, making increases or decreases in that first row or round.

To work out how much to increase or decrease, you can make two separate swatches, calculate the difference in gauge, then do a small test run.

I suspect going from the shaggy yarn to the regular worsted yarn will be easier, because then you will be making increases using the worsted yarn, which is going to be easier to work with.

Sounds like a fun project!

Oh, one more idea. Knit the worsted part of your item and cast off not too tightly. Then pick up stitches to knit your cuff with the shaggy yarn, spacing them out according to your gauge.

Great ideas already. I’d work it as a separate piece and sewnit on afterwards.

You might also browse a range of other projects and patterns to see how similar yarn has been used.

Those boot cuffs are so cute! It doesn’t get very cold where I live, but when I went overseas (Japan) in winter to places where it snows, I saw all sorts of cute cold-weather accessories.
