Knitting with long tail cast on

I would like to know why the yarn is so long between the knitting needles when I knit the first row after using the long tail cast on. I am new to the long tail cast on, which I don’t have a problem with. I would just like to know why the yarn is so long and cumbersome between the needles.:aww:

Welcome to KH. Are you knitting flat or in the round?

Check this video for the long tail cast on just to make sure that you have it right.

The long tail shouldn’t leave a long strand of yarn between the needles although the backward loop method does do that.

I am knitting flat with circular needles.

This may sound really patronizing or something so please forgive me but are you turning your work at the end of the row? Sometimes (maybe I did it :aww: ) a knitter using circs will just keep knitting across and start at the wrong end. I wish I could see your problem, I don’t know why the yarn would be long and cumbersome between the needles. Did you check the link salmonmac provided to be sure we’re talking about the same cast on?

Thank you for your help. I did turn my work. Also, I did watch the video again. I took loose all the stitches I casted on (over a 100). I started over with 7 stitches casted on while watching the video. It seems to be going well. I think I will practice some more and then cast on the 105 stitches again and then hope for the best for the blanket I’m attempting.

I’m so glad it’s working better for you. Sometimes it just takes practice. If this CO continues to give you grief you can sub another.

I just tried this method of casting on I love it! It’s fast, strong, even and easier for me.
