Knitting with circular needles

I am starting a project that is done on circular needles. I have used them before but just for back and forth knitting. This project calls for joining the round after casting on. How do I do this? Thanks so much

First make sure the stitches aren’t twisted and then make sure the working yarn is on the right needle so when you start knitting the work will be joined. Give the first couple stitches a good tug at the join and it won’t leave a gap. Also make sure the needles are in front (toward you) with the cable behind (further away from you) so you are working on the “outside” of the circle (work).

Amy has videos here for circular knitting. give them a look…veddy easy once you see someone else doing it!

thanks for the quick replies. I watched the video. My intructions state after casting on the stitches to join into round. This is the part I don’t understand how to do and the video does not cover that. Do just start knitting or is there something else to do first?

i think i am confused…i just watched the video and it does show how to join so are you asking about what to do AFTER you join? if that is it, it depends on what your pattern says. if it says to knit for x number of rounds or inches just do that. doing just knit stitches in the round will create stockinette stitch. if you put your work down remember when you come back that your working yarn will be coming from the right.

Read my first reply. That is how you join and start knitting. What are you making and what is the pattern?

maybe I am confusing crochet with knit. In crochet when it says to join you use a slip stitch. I think I am trying to make it harder than it really is. So joining a round in circular needle knitting is to just continue knitting. There is no joining of the cast on stitches together other than just continue your knitting. Am I correct?

OH! Okay! Yes, you just slip the needle in like you are going to knit the next stitch…just like when you knit flat, but you will be connecting the two ends. Does that help?

That helped. Of course I always try to make it harder than it really is. Thanks so much!

BTW in am making a felt tote.

Good for you! One good thing about felting is if a stitch is a little wonky it won’t show once it’s felted.
