I am making a takeaway coffee cup holder with 62 stitches and colour patterns. I tried doing flat but the join is not good enough for longevity. I don’t have really small circular needles and think that the smallest I have found (9”) will still be too big. Never used multiple double ended needles or magic loop. Any ideas would be gratefully received.
I learned magic loop for small diameter knitting. Many prefer two circs but I always end up with all the stitches on one needle. Your shorter circ might work for traveling loop. I can use dpn but generally prefer not to. Pick a method to try out and have at it. You’ll be acquiring a valuable skill.

You can also use two circular needles or flexi-flips. Double points and magic loop are fine techniques as well. Why not give one or two of these methods a try?

Do you know where I can get instructions on how to cast on (long tail) and get going with traveling magic loop? I can’t seem to find anything that makes sense

Is it anything like this? I use magic loop and sock yarn.
These bottles are RTIC Journey 26 oz.
I start at the top with 2 ponytail elastics (I used to use one but one broke, so now I double it!). I use a crochet hook to cast 64 stitches onto the elastic. The “64” comes from my sock making. I knit it stockinette or any stitch pattern I like (such as Slip it Simple Sock). I knit to the desired length. I tend to make it too long because they do stretch and that makes them harder to hold. I have re-done some that were too long. I just replaced the bottom of the magenta one because it was getting holes around the edge. I wish I had thought to reinforce it with Wooly Nylon.
I make the flat bottom using a pattern from a flat-topped hat. I run the yarn tail through the last round and tighten it, then weave it in, tightening more if needed.

Staci of Very Pink knits has excellent short videos on the long tail cast on. The first one may be easier to conceptualize as it basically uses your left thumb as a makeshift knitting needle. It is Staci’s preferred method for her own knitting. The second one is the way I learned and still do it: it uses the slingshot method. Staci also has slow motion versions of both of these available.
With regard to the traveling magic loop, I haven’t tried the traveling method, but I learned magic loop from an excellent teacher, so I’ll mention that here. It isn’t free, though. It is “Knit Smarter with Magic Loop” by Lorilee Beltman on Craftsy. She is such an amazingly good teacher that I sign up for just about anything she teaches! I wore the mitts from the class (there are other patterns, too) all winter last year and am looking forward to getting them out again now that the weather is getting cooler. (I made a tiny modification of a few rows of color at the wrist so I can tell which end is which.) The class is available as a stand-alone purchase or as part of a Craftsy membership. FYI Craftsy seems to offer memberhips at deep discounts frequently. I hope you find what you need.
