Knitting sleeves

Hello. I have a pattern for a baby jacket. The pattern for the jacket has a 6 row pattern. In the sleeves, row 3 says to m1 each end. Also, it says to increase 1 stitch each end of row 1 and every following 4th row. Do I also do the m1 or was that just once? Is the m1 helping to shape the sleeves? Thank you for your help

What is the name of your pattern and designer?
Sometimes the pattern stitch has an increase as part of the pattern stitch in order to balance decreases in that pattern.
So for your pattern it depends on the 6 row pattern stitch as far as the row 3 M1 goes.
For the sleeve the increase would be at each end of row 1 and then rows 5,9,13,17 until you reach the stitch count for your size.
Can you quote just the directions for the sleeve increases? Don’t give us a large portion of the pattern due to designer copyright.

Thank you for answering. It is a sirdar pattern.
Row 1 knit
Row 2 k1 p2 to end
Row 3. P1, M1,k1, p2 to last stitch M1 p1
Row 4 purl
Row 5 p2 k1 to end
Row 6 k1 p2 to end
That makes pattern. Than it says increase each end on row 1 and every following 4th row.
Seems like alot of increases quickly.

OK, sounds like the sleeve increases should omit the M1 in row 3 and just work an increase (could be M1 or your favorite increase) starting on row 1 and every following 4th row (1,5,9,13,17 and so on depending on how many increase rows to work for your size).
Does the pattern have a Sirdar number? It helps to see the finished sweater photo.

Sirdar 5284. So do you think they put the M1 in there to do once before the increase on the other rows? So confusing

It may be there as part of the pattern stitch rows but is superseded by the sleeve increases. Does the pattern give you stitch number after the cuff and at the end of the sleeve top? That can be helpful in checking the increase rows.

36 STS at cuff and 54 STS when increases are done. Than pattern until shape top. Total length before shaping top is 18cm for 6 mos. Size

That’s 18sts increased or 9 increase rows (one inc each end). Since the increases are every 4 rows that’s rows 1,5,9,13,17,21,25,29 and 33. The pattern row gauge is 36rows in 10cm so you would be finished with the increases and continue without any further increases until 18cm unless the pattern adds in more shaping.

Thank you so much!
