Knitting pattern software programs.

I’m trying to find a software program that will generate sweater and other patterns, and provide written instructions. Stitch Fiddle is a highly recommended program, but I found out it is for creating color charts. Designaknit 9 is a powerful program, but very expensive and there is a learning curve. Any recommendations? I prefer that it is a download and bonus if it is free :smiley: Thank you all!

I can’t recommend either of these programs as I haven’t tried them but you might take a look at


if you haven’t already.
There are books (see Ann Budd) that help with sweater design. Here’s one of several of hers.

You could try this one

I tried it out once but my problm is not knowing what size i want which it can’t answer. If you kjow what siz you want then you’ll have more success. So, ive played wih it but not made sweater from it. The instructions look pretty good though.
I think it might be free to view but pay to download, can’t remember.

If you are seeking for a free knitting pattern software that can create each chart and written instructions you might consider using one of these: Stitch Mastery: Less expensive than DesignaKnit and has a stitch chart and pattern creation option. KnitBird Free Windows application to create knitting charts (easier to learn than knitting charts but limited to written instructions). EnvisioKnit A lower cost alternative that has features of sweater design and machine knitting. Sweater Wizard An older program that is created specifically for producing personalized sweater patterns and directions. Internet resources for creating personalized sweaters and calculations such as Knitting Fool. A primary objective is to create an automatic sweater pattern from written specs Sweater Wizard or Knitting Fool may be the next best thing that is free or low cost. Though DesignaKnit is the most powerful, many knitting enthusiasts find it more than they require.

That Knitting Fool website looks awesome! I’m bookmarking it for when I’ll get ready to make a sweater :grin:

It certainly is. Just the stitchionary along with the sweater templates is so helpful.

Thank you so much for the information! I checked out KnitsThatFit and installed the free app, but it requires credit card information and states there will be no charge. I stopped setting up the app. Doesn’t that sound odd?

Thank you for your reply! I contacted the owner of the site and she replied that her free software will never ask for credit card info and I most likely installed the app of what appeared to be Google Play and is a scam. I uninstalled the app and went on the KnitsThatFit website and downloaded the app from there. I was able to get right into the app and could start creating a pattern. So all is good :+1: Thank you again!

If you are seeking software that will make a sweater pattern with written instructions, rather than just charting then here are some of the choices you might consider: (If you are looking for downloadable software then there is Knitting Wizard probably. It comes with the ability to create patterns for custom sweaters based on your measurements and gauge and is arguably easier to learn than DesignaKnit. It is paid but much more affordable. Another downloadable program dating back years is called SweaterMaker. Generates custom (user) sweater patterns based on measurements as well as written instructions. It has a great appeal to hand knitters. EnvisiKnit free and open source. Not as slick as the commercial but if you can take a little of a learning curve then it is worth a try. KnitBird Free program primarily used for stitch charts and colorwork but also for generating full patterns for garments. Unfortunately there is no free program that can do everything DesignaKnit does in particular creating fully customizable garments with detailed written instructions. If you want to do this as your main purpose I would recommend you use SweaterMaker or Knitting Wizard or try to make sweaters yourself rather than spending the money on DesignaKnit.
