I’m making an afhgan. I’m pretty new to knitting, I know the basic stitches. But I don’t understand the row 3 pattern instruction
it reads as follows…
*(K2 tog) 3 times, (yo, k1) 6 times, (k2 tog) 3 times, rep from * across.
Now I know how to knit 2 together 3x, but it’s the (yo, k1) do you yarn over 1x then do a knit 1 after the yarn over?
Also when it says repeat from *, does that mean I will have 6 (k2 tog) in a row?
Would you mind giving me detailed instructions on this row?
The afghan started off by casting 216 stitches. When row 3 comes in the count doesn’t remain the same when I do it my way.
The pattern stitch is as follows
Row 1 (RS) knit
Row 2 Purl
Row 3 *(k2 tog) 3 times, (yo, k1) 6 times, (k2 tog) 3 times, rep from
* across
Row 4 knit
repeat these 4 rows for pat st
Well, I’m not sure how many stitches you have total so I don’t know how many repeats you will have to do. The K2tog gets done three times then the (yo,K1) gets done 6 times (yo,K1,yo,k1,yo,k1,yo,k1,yo, k1, yo, k1) then you do another k2tog 3 times. All of this is one repeat. Yes you will end up with 6 k2tog in a row. The row will begin and end with 3. Hope this helps!
A yo involves bringing your yarn between the needles to the front of your work before knitting the next stitch - it will create a new stitch which you will knit on the next row. You can, more than likely, expect to get a holey effect this way but that is probably part of the pattern so don’t panic!
It won’t create more stitches than you started off with because you have done k2tog - making two stitches into one.
The instructions I’ve quoted for the row you’re having difficulties with show that you should k2tog 3 times, yo then k1 6 times then k2tog 3 times and this should be done all along the third row until you have no more stitches left to work.
Also, some patterns change stitch count from row to row depending on how each increase or decrease is compensated for. If you want an example of it, check out the Branching Out Scarf at Knitty.com http://www.knitty.com/issuespring05/PATTbranchingout.html
I suspect that your pattern is kind of lacey, so I wouldn’t worry if your stitch count changes row to row because as you can see with the pattern I’ve linked to it still comes out rectangular in the end! Good luck and make sure to post a pic in the Wha’cha Knittin’ board when you’re done!
