Knitting in the round question

I am knitting a small one skein tote (my first project, YAY). The pattern was knit in the round until you reach about 8". I did that and I am trying to make the handle longer than it calls for. If I do end up having any yarn left, I would like to make the tote part a little taller. Can I just go around and pick up stitches and then begin knitting again? Will that look stupid? Or since it at the top, I could do a double crochet border or something like that. I am going to felt it, so maybe none of it will look any different anyway?

I would bet that if you are felting, you could pick up sts (or even better, dont bind off & leave the sts on the needle until you know for sure) and it wouldn’t make much of a difference.

Well now it looks like with my long strap, I am going to use the rest of the yarn. I like the idea of not binding off though…I’ll definitly use that tip in the future!
