KNITTING IN THE ROUND..BUT BACK AND FORTH

I want to knit a cowl neck to a sweater I have finished…I picked up the stitches and am using a circular needle…There is a pattern to the knit cowl (same as body of sweater)…but I find that when I knit the pattern, the back side (which would be the side showing after folding the cowl down when wearing)…doesn’t have the pattern on it. This must be because of knitting in the round but I have to use circular needles for the neck. Is there any way to use the circular needles but knit back and forth like using straight needles BUT joining the seam area together at the same time? Is this possible? Is there a video of it? Thanks

You can certainly knit back and forth with circular needles.

The simplest join and prettiest join is to use mattress stitch. You may want to add a stitch at each end which will become part of the seam if you decide to go this way.

You could also still work in the round with your circular needles. Turn the sweater inside out with the wrong side (WS) facing and pick up the required number of sts. Join and knit in the round with the pattern facing you for the cowl. When you finish and turn the right side out, the cowl will curve over with the RS showing.

I may be misunderstanding, but to me, if you’re switching to knitting in the round it seems you’d have to work the “wrong side” rows opposite of the way you worked them flat. For instance, if you were knitting stockinette you’d work one row knit, one row purl when working flat. But when working round, you’d work every row knit. Am I making sense here?

Yes, that’s correct.
It seemed to me that the problem here was that knitting in the round, the wrong side was showing when the cowl neck was folded over. The trick was to get the cowl sts picked up so that the right side was showing when the sweater was worn.

Hi…I’m the one that had the question. I had a pattern like a basketweave but different on both sides…one side had the pattern I wanted. I finally did the back and forth with cirular needles for the cowl, but, I started with ROW 2 instead of row 1, which gave me the the pattern side I wanted when the cowl was turned down.

Sandy6 whenever I have worked a cowl neck I pickup my stitches then turn my work around and work in the opposite direction, so the last stitch picked up will be the first stitch worked. This in effect reverses the right and wrong sides. Good Luck
