Hi! So I’m a beginner knitter and I’m currently working on my first Blanket! So I’m working on It right now and It got me thinking about makeing this mosiac blanket I keep seeing that looks like A bookcase! 1 problem. Its crochet! Has anyone seen a knitting pattern of this? Can you knit it? Have you tried it? If so is it worth it? I need Help! PS. if anyone is confused I got the picture online. :slightly_smiling_face:

You’ll need to learn some new techniques for this. There are several ways of doing multi-color projects.

Here’s a pattern in double-knitting, where you kind of knit 2 fabrics at once, and the colors are reversed on the back:

That’s actually the only similar knitting pattern I found with a quick search. I would think it could work in mosaic, but you’d have to write your own pattern.

Others here might have more ideas.

It’s really ambitious for a beginner project.
There’s a chance you could buy the pattern/charts from the designer and ignore the crochet instructions and just use them as a colour work chart for a knitted blanket.
You could also make your own colourwork knitting chart on squared or graph paper to get the variety of books and bits and bobs on the shelves.
It is definitly possible in knitting.

Learning intarsia, stranded colour work, or double knitting as previously mentioned would be the first step and these are more managable on a smaller project or swatch

I’d be put off by the overall weight of the project, it would be pretty heavy to work on.

I’ll add Norman’s tutorial on mosaic knitting as well, since that’s the technique you’re asking about :face_with_tongue:

So many things are possible! I have no doubt this is doable with knitting

I’m not convinced this design can be made with mosaic knitting technique although mosaic knitting itself is stunning and something I have barely tried.

The technique in the original is overlay mosaic crochet which is a method of crochet (overlaying previous rows with a different colour where needed to create the colour design).

Here’s the original design (extended version with additional charts) for anyone who wants to make it

Welcome to the forum!
You seem to be a new knitter up for a challenge. Why not knit the Book Lovers pattern as a double knit as written? You could test it out with this potholder pattern to see if you like the technique and want to continue with the larger project.

Oh that’s perfect for trying out the book shelf design and double knitting. I’ve saved it.

I’ve saved it as well! I’ve never tried any double knitting, and a smaller project is appealing.
