Knitting Graph

Hi, I found a lovely cat sweater and want to knit it but the graph is a lot smaller than the cat displayed on the sweater??? How can I make it bigger please.J13

What is the name of your pattern and the designer?

Hi, unfortunately I have not got these details just a picture of the sweater and the graph which came up on Pintrest (now I cannot find it) I did make a copy but for some reason I cannot copy/paste it. Will keep trying and if I manage to get a copy will snd it to you. I am not computerwise so having probs,Regards J13

Found it …

The size it comes out will depend on the thickness of the yarn you use. Looks like the kitty would be 60 stitches across. You could try making swatches with part of the design (like the tail?), until you find the needles/yarn that will give you the size image you want.

Worsted weight = 5 stitches/inch, so the kitty would be about 12" from ears to tail, which isn’t really a bad size. I would think worsted or Aran weight would give you a nice sweater.

Yes, I see what you mean but 60 stitches would be too large as I am aiming to knit one for a small child. I will have to sit and try and work it out as you suggest. Thanks for reply. Jean13

It’s such a clever pattern. If you went down to a sport weight (about 6sts/inch) the kitty would be 10inches long. At a fingering weight (7sts/inch) about 8.5inches but it would be a rather light weight sweater.

What age/size did you want to make?
I was just looking at stitch count for a randomly selected kids sweater in DK and it was 68 sts across front for age 2 years. The graph in total across is 70 sts so if you cropped 1 stitch each side you could have a large image of the cat. If it was for age 3 or 4 it would be a better fit.

Thanks for the info. Don’t know where I am going wrong as I counted the graph having just 14 squares acriss - that usually relates to 1 square equals 1 stitch - so a very small cat??? I usually put 54 stitches with double yarn for a tots sweater!!!

Each of those 14 squares is divided into 5 squares, which would be more the size of stitches. Look at how the tail jogs as it goes down…it’s 4 stitches wide, and they keep shifting by one stitch to give the shaping.

Hi, many thanks for explaining - now I have made the graph bigger I can see that 1 square equals 5 so I’ll be able to work it out. Much appreciated.

It isn’t going to fit well on 54 sts across. You will need a bigger sweater for this cute cat.

It’s a really great design.

Ok thanks for the advice - will knit one for a bigger child. Size doesn’t really matter as all my knitting is for local charities here in Spain, Your advice is much appreciated - thanks.

You’re welcome Jean. Enjoy your knitting.
Someone will have a real treat finding this generous donation!

Thank you - I enjoy knitting and it keeps me young (and out of mischief) ha ha.
Just been going through my patchwork period and knitting patchwork sweaters with all my odd balls of yarn. Now our Knit and Natter group are getting ready for the winter - knitting hats, scarves and gloves for the Homeless - so a never ending fete,
Keep smiling and knitting
