Knitting from measurements

I saw a this mentioned in a catalog. Are there some tips out there about doing this. I make a lot of hats, (not from patterns) and as simple as they are, I often have to redo them. They’re too tight or too loose.

Any tips or ideas? Anyone “knit from measurements”?

TIA

Welllllllll…if I get what you’re asking, it means taking a person’s (in this case, head) measurement, and then adapting your pattern to fit that measurement.

You’d have to do a gauge swatch for each combination of needle, yarn, and stitch (but you’re doing this anyway, right???) in order to translate the measurement into a number of stitches.

Hope this helps.

Sounds like http://www.mielkesfarm.com/bsic_hat.htm could be of help.

That is brilliant Ingrid! Thanks! I think one of my main problems is not subtracting the 1-2" on the brim part to make it snug fitting. As we speak, I’m ripping out the prettiest cabled hat (my first cables, BTW) b/c it was waaaay too loose. :frowning: I think the fabric was too loose, also (too big a size needles). Sigh. Oh, well!

It’s so silly since I’ve made so many hats. I think I can “free” knit anything. I’m just in denial about how much ripping I do, LOL!!!
