I am planning to knit a cardigan or a sweater for my friend’s daughter, but I want it to be a surprise :teehee: The problem is the girl is wearing size 5T and is 2.5 years old (will be 3 next march)… I have no kids so I have no idea what 5T means!!!:?? Does any of you with kids know?? Most of the patterns I am interested in offer sizes according to age (like 2, 3, 4 year old, etc) and then by “translating” that in inches (like 24", 26" 28" for example). My friend said something like the girl is wearing big clothes for her age, apparently 5T is for kids older than 2.5 years old?? Anyway, do you know how many inches a 5T kid’s chest should messure?
Sorry, I just haven’t had contact with infants or children for a long, long time… :roflhard:
I think the T stands for “toddler”, but in searching the internet I didn’t come up with anything for a 5T, just a plain 5. Is the child tall or heavy? Or both?
There is quite a bit of difference in sizes for what the average 2-3 yr old would wear and a size 5 so it might be a little hard to figure this out w/o actual measurements. You can see that there is a difference between even the 4T and the standard 4. So I guess a 5T might be on the smaller side of a standard 5?
From what I’ve heard, the T sizes are bigger in the bum and stuff because they are meant to be for kids who haven’t started to thin out yet. My oldest jumped from 4T to 4 or 5 in boys’ this past summer. I’d try just a tad larger than the 4T.
Kelly is right. The T is bigger in the bottom for a diaper. A 5T for a 2 1/2 year old is huge. I have an almost 3 year old that 3s are big on. (my kids are average size) My 4 year old is wearing a 5, my GUESS is that she is about 17inches around the chest and then shes straight all the was down…no bottom poor thing. She only needs 5s for length not around. So if the 2 year old is cubby then you might need shorter arms and wider/longer middle. I’d just ask for her measurements.

Thank you guys for your help. I am still kind of confused. I will definitively have to ask for her messurements although it won’t be a surprise anymore  Anyway, I just found this information online:
Wow… that little girl is my youngest daughter’s age exactly and wearing a 5T!!! My oldest will be 5 in March and is just getting into a 5/5t for height.
5 & 5t are usually interchangeable, as PP said usually more bum room for diapers in 5t but the height/weight is usually the same range.
Anyway, if that’s the size she’s wearing, then I’d knit it that size… it does sound huge for a 2.5 year old, but some kids are that big!
5T is big for that age…but not impossible. If mom says she is a 5T, I would believe her.
Just for an idea of what that means…it means that she is basically the same size as the average 5 year old…but with all her baby fat.
My dd is 4 years old and can wear a 4T in length…but only if it’s belted or has an adjustable waist. She’s a skinny kid. She can wear regular fours…but the build tends to be a little bigger in the shoulders. Sizing is weird.
Not necessarily. It just depends on the kid. I’ve had a 3yo that wore a size 5 and a 3yo that wore 18mos and now my older “size 5er” is just a few inches taller than me (she’s 15 and 5’3") and her sister, the “size 18moser” is only 12 and is almost as tall as me (I still have a few hairs’ width to go). It all just comes down to some odd genetic thing. I’d go with the size 5 and 24". If it is too big ,then she can always wear the sweater longer! That’s not such a bad thing. I used to make the kids sweaters at least a size larger than what they were wearing and then cuff the sleeves. They look cute in baggy sweaters.
I have a 2½ year old that wears a 5T…all three of my kids wore 5T’s at this age, and none of them were overweight or abnormally tall (they wore 5T on the tops but a slightly smaller size on the bottoms). Clothing sizes also depend on where you buy clothes, too, because some stores’ clothes run really small. We bought my daughter a dress from Target, and she fit into a 6X at 2½, believe it or not, because I have found that for my kids, their clothes consistently run small. I think my 1½ year old nephew is in a size 3T.
The “T” in the size does stand for toddler.
My kids always wore large sizes, it’s certainly possible for a nearly 3 year old to wear 5t. My youngest was nearly 10 lbs at birth, and hit 20 lbs at 4 months. LOL! Some kids are just bigger earlier. On the positive side, kids who are larger when they are young usually slow down their growing around the ages of 3-5, so she should get a lot of wear out of a 5t sweater. My youngest is almost 4, and in the past year he has only gained a couple of lbs. He’s still wearing a lot of the same shirts and sweaters he wore this time last year.
Thank you all… now I feel less confused :teehee: No, seriously, I am understanding this size thing for kids much better with all the information you all have given me I have never bought babies or kids clothing, so the sizes and everygthing is kind of abstract for me. But I feel more confident now
