Knitting Bag Design?

Yes, I know I’ve posted a lot in the last couple of days…

But this is about designing a bag/holder for knitting supplies. The photo below is of what I have now, an ArtBin folder I bought at JoAnn last summer for about $15, when I finally accumulated enough needles that I couldn’t just poke them thru a ball of yarn or leave them in a half-finished project.

But now, only a few months later, it is becoming inadequate, and I don’t have lots of spare money lying around to spend on one of those nice knitting bags.

So my question is, has anyone here designed their own knitting bag, even just a folder for needles and assorted odds and ends? Is there a certain design that works well? Really I already have a tote bag I use for projects, so making a whole new bag might not be necessary. I just need a compact way to store needles and odds and ends.

Personally I don’t like the deep pockets on the right-hand side of the ArtBin folder. I’ve thought about making a needle roll (I have a paintbrush roll from when I took a Japanese calligraphy class, and I could easily do something similar for knitting/crochet needles), but I don’t think that would be good for holding scissors, stitch markers, gauge checker, etc.

I suppose that’s enough rambling. Thoughts?

If you look in the “whatcha knitting” forum KellyK just made a nice felted knitting bag.

BTW…don’t worry about posting a lot…have you looked at the top posters int he memberlist? Now those are a lot!

:roflhard: Believe me, 15 posts is not a lot. The more, the merrier! Bring 'em on!

At my local SnB, there’s a woman who buys placemats from Kohl’s and other stores to make needle roll cases. If you have some sewing experience, you could easily make one. Be careful, though – the lady I’m talking about got addicted to making them and can’t stop.

The placemats are thick and could hold scissors and any other pointy objects well.

What, me, sew? ::peeks out from behind two sewing machines and a pile of unfinished projects::

Actually, I haven’t done much sewing since last summer when it was too hot here in Texas to knit. Placemats is a pretty good idea, though. Holds sharp objects without having to be too heavy or require quilting…

Yes, I think I could work with that.

I used to live in Plano! Both my boys were born at that hospital!!!
