I was wondering if anyone here has knit and fulled a vase. Something that you could display fake flowers or hold some needles. Did you use a pattern? I’m not finding any right now, so I might just give it a try and see what happens.
I’ve seen some cool ones, but I haven’t made any. I did a quick search and couldn’t find any either - but I’d definitely vote for just giving it a try and seeing what happens. It seems like it’d be a fun thing to be creative with. Go for it!! And don’t forget to let us know how it turns out!!!
I can’t remember where on earth I saw it but I’m sure someone here provided a link recently and on the page there was a felted vase. Hope someone knows.
I just put ‘felted vase’ into google and got a bunch of links like this one:

Is fulled the same as felted as I don’t know the word.
I have some patterns from Knit Picks for felted vases. Try their website.
Technically, I think there is a difference between ‘felted’ and ‘fulled.’ but I think the end result is pretty much the same. Try googling ‘felted containers’ or something similar. You may find some felted/fulled boxes, bowls, similar shapes that you can make taller and maybe narrower to get a vase shape.
Some ideas: First two links are straightforward.
The third link, from the V&A, has a photo of a knitted jug but you’ll need a spare six months to wade through the text.

Thanks everybody,
Mirl56, yes there is a difference. When you knit something and put it in the wash you are fulling it. If you take some roving and stab it with a needle you are felting it. Some people use the word felt for both and I did google both words.
Limey, thanks for the links. All of those are just knitted. They’re more like vase covers.
I’m planning on knitting it and then putting it in the wash to end up with a stiffer felt fabric that can stand up on its own.
I’ll let you know how it goes.
Hi
You’re very welcome! Sorry, I couldn’t find felted or fulled -and yeah, it would be great if you could let us know how you get on.
I’d love to see it take shape. Right now, I’ve got four inflated balloons, covered with paper mache, sitting on my spare room table. I do arts and crafts with people who have learning difficulties and we’re making flower vases.
All the Best
When you put something in the washing machine you’re fulling it, but most people just call it felting
Here is a felted vase pattern from Knitty: Numbers
I also once made my own little vase without a pattern, other than a circular coaster pattern that I used for the base. Then I simply knit up the sides, put in a couple of decrease rows a few rows apart near the top, and did an I-cord bind off. It turned out kind of cute.

Fulling is done to a woolen fabric. Felting is done to wool that’s not been spun into yarn yet. There is both dry and wet felting. If you take some roving and roll it into a ball, put the ball in a nylon stocking and tie so that it is stationery in the stocking, throw it in the washer and run it through the cycle, you will have made a felted ball or pincushion

If you take roving and wrap it around a bar of soap completely covering it, wet it and squish it around for quite a while, you’ll have made a felted cover for a bar of soap. http://www.mielkesfarm.com/felt_soap.htm

Now you just need to tell me what roving is
Oh… I gather it is carded wool? If that is not easy to obtain…what is a substitute?
And this may be a silly question…but…the felted soap that was on the site…and using it in the shower…the soap just comes through the felt? Is there a purpose aside from decorative? Loofah like?
Yep, roving is fiber that is ready to spin, and its not that hard to find.
Here are some places where I’ve bought it.

You can find some beautiful hand dyed fiber on etsy.
I haven’t tried making felted soap yet, but it would make it not so slippery.
I still have to put it through the wash, but here’s my progress on the vase so far.
I’m unsure on how the base and edge will shrink. I want to see how it turns out, but I need to be around long enough to run the washing machine.
Hey…that’s great! That will work out really well. I’ve been experimenting in other ways. One was a time consuming disaster but I like to experiment and try different things…as one technique fails miserably you learn how to approach a second and so on
Here would be something cute to put into your vase (enable, enable) :teehee:
Oh, Thank you Susan and cookworm!
Those flowers look really good. I still have some rather sad looking roses that I made up.
I got around to washing my vase. I like it.

What do you think?
i think it turned out great! I love the rufled top, the colors are pretty too
