I am making a puffin bird where the belly is a different color from the side body color.
The pattern tells me to use 2 different balls of the side body color which I have managed to figure out.
To make the belly, it seems that I simply start over on each new line to incorporate the belly color. That will mean I have a loose strand on the beginning and end of each belly line. I will then have to sew in the lines that end up on the RS of my pattern and tie them to the WS lines.
Does anyone have any hints on how to avoid having to cut each time and weave in every single row for the belly? I have 18 rows of belly.
Can you tell us the pattern name and designer, so we can see what it’s supposed to look like?
You can also quote a few lines of the pattern if you like, or take a photo of just that part of the pattern. We can’t post the whole thing due to designer copyright, but it’s OK to post a portion.
Welcome to KH. I’m not quite understanding what you mean. Is this knit in the round? It’s possible to do intarsia in the round but it works out to knitting it flat using a method to join the first and last stitches of each row to avoid a seam later. Knowing what pattern you’re working would be very helpful.
It sounds like intarsia knitting.
There are lots of videos on this, depnding on your style of knitting you might prefer a video tutorial uing continental style, but here is an English style example (the yarn is crossed in any style the only difference is which hand you hold the yarn in).
The yarn is not cut each time you change colour, so you don’t need to cut or weave in lots of lengths. Just remember to always cross old over new (old colour goes over the top of the new yarn) at each colour change.
Trying it out on a swatch for practise would help to become familiar wih the method before trying it on your real project.
Sometimes it’s just hard to know what to search for isn’t it? I find that too. Great that we have a place to find out these terms.
I have really enjoyed learning intarsia, I hope you do too.
Any problems just ask.
We would love to see your puffin too if you like to share pics.
