Knitted tube circumference/no. stitches

Writing a pattern for a toy with a narrow waist, generously sized though so it should be around 30cm circumference at that point. My stitch gauge is 26 stitches to 10cm. I think 78 stitches just seems like too many, however! Is there a more accurate way to work it out?

If you are going to stuff this toy you probably need to take stretching into account and reduce the stitch count a bit to achieve 30cm circumference. Maybe try to slightly stretch your swatch piece as much as you imagine the stuffing would do and then count the stitches?

Otherwise your calculation is as good as it can get: with 26st/10cm you need 78 stitches for a circumference of 30cm (which means about 9.5cm diameter).

Ah, maybe I second guess myself a bit too much but good to know I was on the right track! Thanks. It will be stuffed, just got to decide how firm really, but that’s a great tip!

I meant to type 36 stitches per 10cm, not 26 :woman_facepalming: I don’t know why I typed 26 cos I literally looked at my swatch notes before I started this thread. What a wally I am! But I’m assuming it would work out similar anyway?
Stretched out a bit, it comes to 29.5 stitches in 10cm, which gives me around 88, or 108 if I was going by the relaxed gauge.

What pattern is it?

If your gauge is 26 st/10 cm, then 78 should be just about perfect to get you a 30 cm waist. Or are you saying that your waist is coming out to 30 cm, when it should be thinner?

It’s something I’m designing from scratch, based on a video game character - at the size I want to make him, his waist should be around 30cm. I’m probably going to start again with different yarn anyway. I’m sure I can get similar gauge. This one stretches a little as it’s sock yarn with nylon. Another mistake! But it was pretty much the perfect colour lol.
I amended my gauge in my last post - I originally typed 26 but it’s 36 stitches in 10cm.
Thanks for your help!
