Knitted summer gift suggestions

Hi all

My mum wants a pair of my seemingly popular mittens…so I thought I’d knit her a matching scarf too (my first scarf project),and possibly a hat too…and I willdo these for her…I’ve cast on the mittens already.:teehee:

However, it occured to me that by the time I have them finished and ready for posting (we live in different countries) its not going to be cold enough for her to use them…and so, once completed I’ll store them away and post them to her next winter instead.

But I’d still like to knit her something and post it off as a surprise…and reasonably soon.

So, any suggestions for a nice summery gift type item that a noob-knitter can knit, preferably on straight needles**, that will be postable when completed (i.e not too bulky or odd-shapped)…that I don’t need all her measurements for, and that won’t take me forever to finish (I presently knit approx 1-2 hrs a day 4-5 days a weekand & whilst not dead slow, I’m not overly fast either)

A lot to ask I know, sorry…but open to suggestions as all I can think of right now are mittens, scarfs & woolly hats…and I can’t seem to think outside of those items :aww:

**Haven’t done anything on circular needles yet, and don’t want her gift to be my first, experiimental efforts :aww:

:??

If she drinks soda or beer or something that she might want to keep cold a can/bottle cozy might be nice. Or nice absorbent coaster?

I posted the 2nd time to ask the mods to change my title after a spelling error…then I worked out how to fix it myself, which meant my 2nd post no longer made sense

She’d be more into wine than soda/beer  …would a knitted wine cooler work? Is there such a thing?
Hmmm…could even do it in the colour of her vw campervan, to use when she’s out on the road…that idea definitely has legs if such a pattern exists?

Or failing that, a summery shawl or shoulder wrap type thing, that isn’t overly complicated and won’t take ages to complete…asking the impossible I guess.

A market bag is easy and something useful - especially if she travels alot. Most are made in the round, but you will be surprised how easy knitting in the round is, once you dive in.

Or maybe a felted purse?

What aboutplacemats? There are loads of patterns and you can make as many as you’d like.

Thanks everyone for all your great suggestions…the soda/beer cooler idea intrigued me, so I went a pattern-huntin’

And I think I’ve narrowed it down doing these for her:

Wine Cozy

and, to match…

Wine Glass Holder
(no better reason to bite the bullet and break those circs I keep buying out of their packaging  )

Have the perfect yarn, as far as colour is concerned - her campervan is Savannah Beige…now I just need to get to grips with my tension gauge issues - but that’s another post :aww:

Another thing might be dish or washcloths. I think the yarn I use is Sugar and Cream cotton yarn. It depends on how fancy you want to get here. You can do a simple garter stitch or a knit 1, purl 1 or k2, p2 rib for a cushioned cloth. You can also make a simple knitted tube to fit around Starbucks coffee cups. Seems like I’m always getting my fingers burned on those things when they first serve it.

A sunhat, which I’m looking for myself.

Ooh, I quite fancy having a go at one of those for myself!

Please do let me know if you find one

I don’t know what’s involved in making a shaped hat. Will research and let you know.
