Knitted scarf for a 3 yr old

I’d like to knit a scarf for my 3 yr old grandson. He’s tall for his age , and he would only wear it when plays in the snow with his parents . I’d like something that knits up fast . What yarn do you suggest , and how wide and long ?should the scarf be ?

Use a machine washable yarn like Vanna’s Choice or Cascade Pacific Chunky. Garter stitch will make a scarf that lies flat without curling. It’s a slow growing stitch pattern but in a bulky yarn it will work up quickly.
About 5 inches by about 30 inches or however long you would like will work.

This hooded scarf is also an idea:

I love the look of this. I might have to give this a try for my granddaughter

I couldn’t get to my hat notebook but this is the pattern I was initially searching for. I’ve made it a number of times. It avoids the problem of having a long scarf at the neck on a child.

There’s errata noted about the short rows but I must have just winged it. The photos with the pattern are nicer than the ones on Ravelry.

I was wondering if a cowl / neckwarmer might be better for a small child than a scarf, as it couldn’t fall off or get tangled in something.

Thanks so much ! I bought Hometown USA yarn. Do you think that’s ok ? How many st should I cast on with this yarn, and what about the length with this yarn?

The pattern for the toasty topper is set for 16sts/4" stockinette and Hometown knits at 9/4". You could follow the pattern for a top down hat that knits at close to the yarn gauge similar to this one

and then cast on for the scarf portion according to the toasty topper.

It might be easiest however to save the Hometown for another hat and find a yarn closer to the 16sts/4" like Cascade 220 superwash aran.

I get so irritated when site says free pattern but in order to access you have to set up an account. I feel it sets you up to get a lot of unwanted emails. But since I like this pattern I might have to succumb to this tactic. (I think my age is showing).

I agree. This is painful and annoying but sometimes necessary.

Is it the hat on ravelry you’re after @KnittinGigi?
I have an account in ravelry and have never received a single email from them, I mean possibly one when I first opened it to confirm I am ral and not a spam bot, but never anything since. I have down loaded lots of patterns from there too, no bother at all.

I am very particular about these things too, I like to keep my email ‘clean’.

It’s actually the lion brand website. If you click on free download on ravelry site it sends you to the lion brand website

Ah OK. There are lots of pattern links on this thread, I wasn’t looking at the right one.

I made separate mail acc and use it for only that kind of stuff. Dont even open mails just monthly emptying box😅

Well after all the stewing about getting the pattern I decided to show it to my granddaughter before I went any further. Well she shot that down real quick. She just turned 10 but certainly has become very opinionated recently. I used to be able to get her anything and she’d love it. Case in point, I bought her some animal print leggings to go with a sweater I’d knitted and she politely told me they “were not in” this year despite wearing a smaller size pair last year. I guess gone are the easy days.

You’re so lucky you got to 10 years old before this fashionista revealed herself! I’m dealing with a 7 year old.

Good you checked first - lesson learned.
I have to check with my son before I make him something and which clothes I’m allowed to buy him too.

I raised 3 boys and I don’t remember this. Now raising a granddaughter it’s a whole new world. But yes she is definitely a fashionista. I hate to return things so I’m learning to check though it makes gift giving hard. I have to be sneaky
