Knitted Buttons

Okay here’s the thing, I’m knitting a project that requires some buttons. But I just can’t seem to find any buttons I’d be happy with, so I thought I’d try to make my own yarn buttons. Well the thing is I’ve found instructions for Crochet Buttons and Dorset Buttons. Problem is, even though I like the Crochet Buttons, I don’t know how to crochet so that’s out, and the Dorset Button rings would be too big for the project.

So my question is, does anyone have an idea on how to make a knitted button? Maybe one that doesn’t require any thing besides like yarn and knitting needles? I sort of don’t want to have to go out and buy more items to make some buttons. I hope someone can help me. Thanks.

I thought this was pretty cool. I’m not sure if it’s exactly what you’re looking for, but I have it bookmarked in case I want to get adventurous.

I was thinking you could try to just cast on your yarn with smaller than recommended needles and knit in the round to get a denser fabric button, maybe even knit the increase rows and purl the next row to get a garter type feel? I like to play around and create my own ‘solutions’ but it usually takes a few tries :wink:

There was an article/email recently from Knitting Daily (I think) about making buttons. You cut circles out of cardboard as the ‘base’ so you could make them any size. Let me see if I can find it again…

Thank you this one looks interesting. Not quite what I’m looking for but I’ll keep it in mind.

Thanks, I’ve already tried making those buttons (linked to them in the first post under Checkerboard Buttons). I did it in plastic instead of cardboard so it’s washable, the problem is the yarn slips everywhere.

Maybe you could make bobbles of whatever size you need and use them as buttons.

How small do you want the buttons? You could use the dorset method you linked in your first post; but, use smaller rings…in fact, you may have some small o-rings/ grommets in your garage/tool box that might be just the right size:think:
