They are worth the money! Two sets converted our Coleman camp table (29"x62") into 36"x72" blocking surface! The bit of overhanging surface still supports the knitting, even with wet towels on top of the pinned pieces. The squares melt into each other when you are putting them together! And they are nice and flat, not lumpy bumpy.

THREE HIGHLIGHTS:
your blocking pins jab into the squares with ease…this is particularly nice when you have a lot of pins to install…I get so tired of pushing pins. These blocking squares are a dream.
the surface of the blocking squares is smooth, therefore, you can skooch your sweater pieces around into the right shapes and lengths without stretching them before you pin them down…the blocking squares do not fight with you
a few squares can be snapped together for small projects and need hardly any room; same goes for a long narrow scarf. You can clip the squares together into the shape you need, and no more.
Altogether, the 2 sets of Knitpicks blocking squares for $40 create more blocking surface (36x72) than the $80 SPACE BOARD blocking board (32x50).
The blocking squares do not have the grid, and so you must use your yardstick and measuring tape a bit more.
Overall, the KnitPicks Blocking Squares are well worth the $19.99 per set. Artlady recommends them!
When and if you get ready to purchase them, by clicking through to KnitPicks on one of their ADS here at KH, you will also be contributing support to KH, cuz our paying advertisers (KnitPicks is one) will stay with us if their ads pay off! It doesn’t matter if the ad is featuring a socks promotion. Just click through to KnitPicks from the sock ad, and click the accessories tab. Then click BLOCKING MATS. It is right there on the accessories page.
Thanks for supporting Knitting Help with your click-through to KnitPicks!
Thanks for the review! If you recommend them, then they must be something :happydance: ! I might just have to get some.
On another note, I didn’t realize that about Knitpicks (about ordering through a link here) and just placed an order with them. I will make sure to order through the links here from now on!!
An advantage of the blocking mats is the color. Being a light grey, I don’t worry about any color transfer to my knitting.
I have heard of the little foam kneeling pads for doing yardwork, and also for gym ‘workouts’ like sit-ups, etc.
However, I don’t know how thick they are, or the color.
My grandchildren have some blocks that look exactly like these and fit together the same way – except that they are brightly colored and have letters of the alphabet all over them. Now that they both can read, they just use if for acrobatics and floor games. I was going to “adopt” it for blocking when they got a little older, but at $20 the KnitPicks version is way better. (And it hasn’t been peed on.)
Yeah…long before knit picks came out with these…I had gone to home depot and got a pack of 4 of those squares for $15…they work great…
I actually read about it in a comment made on one of the Yarn Harlots posts about blocking on the bed. The comment was something about how she prefered to use those kind of blocks as they can be stood up and out of the way once the item was pinned…and no worries about leaving pins in the bed…smiles
At Costco a couple months back, I got a set of very similar squares. The main difference? They’re nearly twice the size for the same price. I love them
I just purchased some from Lowes and they measure 24"x24". I needed something to block my needlepoint and three of them together let me use common pins instead of tacks. I noticed that one side is smooth but the other side has a sort of a woven pattern which is great for squaring things up. Thanks for the great suggestion.
I was thinking of buying them, if the exchange rate wasn’t so forbidding… I’ll go shopping and see if I can find something equivalent in a regular store!
