You can pick up stitches along the length of the opening and work an applied buttonband (with or wihout buttons) which is knit vertically but attaches to the body as you go along by joining to the picked up stitches. Look up applied button band for this, there are lots of videos.
Or you can knit a seperate band and seam it on to the body. I am doing this at the moment, i will seam mine with mattress stitch to a knitted body but you can also attach with a line of crochet.
Either way working a decent length swatch for the band will help a great deal with calculating the gauge so you can attach it flat (how many rows of body to how many rows of band when the band is stretched just slghtly to prevent a wobbly band).
