Knit in the Round for Beret Pattern

This is my First attempt at knitting in the round. I’m am using the pattern: I could only copy the link through google.

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwiWp-zrwPXtAhWIylkKHaTkAEQQFjABegQIAhAC&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.yarnspirations.com%2Fon%2Fdemandware.static%2F-%2FSites-master-catalog-spinrite%2Fdefault%2Fdw61ed4e55%2FPDF%2FCAK0116-009262M.pdf&usg=AOvVaw0TpM4X_HwQ1APjpGaspsJr

The pattern does not state how many stitches to cast on for the rib pattern. Because the number of stitches to cast on is only stated in the hat part of the pattern. Do I use these number of stitches to cast on for the rib pattern part of the pattern? Or is round 1 the number of stitches that begin “cast on” the rib pattern part of the pattern, when the pattern says:
Rnd 1: *P2, k2; rep from * around.

Also, when the pattern says: Rnd 1: *P2, k2; rep from * around.

Then says

Rnd 2: *P2, sl 1 knitwise, k1, drop knitted st carefully from

Is this saying the FIRST ROW in the round will be 8 stitches made up of a combination of 2 purl and 2 knit stitches that was repeated twice then the NEXT ROW of the round will begin with 2 purl stitches, followed by the slip 1 knitwise, etc?

Another question is for this:
Rnd 2: *P2, sl 1 knitwise, k1, drop knitted st carefully from needle, move sl st to left hand needle and move dropped stitch to right hand needle, k the sl st; rep from * around.
Rep Rnds 1 and 2 for Rib patt.

I am just confused as to what I need to do. Can you all explain what this is saying?

Also, when the pattern says:
Rib Pattern (multiple of 4 sts)

Does this mean the first 2 rounds will be repeated 4 times?

Please see the pattern in the link provided? If my questions are confusing.

Thank you so much for any help you can give me.

Welcome!
These are all good questions. Good for you for teaching yourself to knit in the round. It’s a very handy technique to learn.
The pattern gives you the size, measurements, materials and the stitch gauge then tells you the sts that will be used in the pattern. In your pattern it’s stockinette stitch and rib stitch. After that the pattern proper begins with the cast on:
“HAT
Using smaller circular needle, CO 80 (88) sts. Place marker
and join”

The first round (since this is worked in a circle rather than back and forth in rows) is 80 or 88sts depending on the size you’re making. It’ll be a combination of knits and purls for the cast on number of sts. Round 2 uses the drop stitch pattern as given under “Rib Pattern”.

When the pattern tells you it’s a multiple of 4sts it means that you need to cast on a multiple of 4, like 80 or 88sts. If you want to decrease the size of the beret, you could cast on 76 or 72sts and if you want to increase the size, 92 or 96sts.

The round 2 directions under Rib are for making a small cable in which the order of knitting the 2sts is reversed. The second stitch on the left needle is knit first, then the first stitch. There are a couple of ways to work this left cross or cable. See especially 2:00 min.

Thank you so much for helping me. After several hours of reviewing the information you gave me and replaying the video. I have finally figured it out. I am trying to get an understanding of what I need to do.

Last question, under the title HAT, after the rib pattern is complete, is the next stitches to be made the Inc Rnd followed by Rnd 1 and 2? Will all these rounds be stitched until I reach the marker area?

Also, how do you shape crown? Or is the pattern saying the stitches that follow shape the crown? (Under the HAT instructions)

Yes, after the rib, work the Inc Rnd onto the larger needles. Then knit Rnd 1 from the first stitch to the left of the marker to the last stitch which is to the right of the marker. Continue with the following rounds of the slip stitch pattern including round 38.

Round 39 will give you the directions for shaping the crown, decreases using k2tog.

I truly thank you. You are making this so easy. What looked foreign to me is unraveling beautifully.

I am at the end of the pattern and three things are puzzling me now. When the pattern says:

Rnds 50 and 51: Work even in Stockinette st.

What does it mean when it says: Work even in

Also, the pattern states:
Rnd 52: K0 (k1) *k2tog; rep from * around—15 (17) sts.

K0? Is it saying don’t knit just bring two knit stitches together while working around a total of 15 stitches?

I promise this is the last question. If I use a yarn whose gauge produce less or more stitches then indicated in the pattern gauge what do I need to do to make the yarn work with the pattern that I am using?

Again, thank you so much for your help

Wow, you are really making progress!
Work even means with no increases or decreases. For your pattern, just knit around.

K0 means for the smaller size, skip this direction. Proceed directly to k2tog and then repeat k2tog all the way around. You’ll end with 15sts.

If you’re using a yarn that produces a different gauge you could try knitting with a different size needle (a larger needle if the yarn gauge is more sts per inch, a smaller needle if the gauge is fewer sts per inch). The problem may be that in doing this you don’t like the knit fabric. It’s either too lacy or too stiff. In that case you would adjust the number of sts cast on instead of the needle size. (Keep the multiple in mind if you do this.)

Questions are always welcome here.
