So you know how you always see crocheted bathing suits? They are super cute and usually a bikini, (which I would never wear because I am obese and nobody wants to see that) but anyway, how come there are no knit patterns for bathing suit? Is it because it requires more shaping or structure than a knit piece can offer? I am just curious about this. Same as certain hats- like how come how come knitted hats can’t offer the same structural integrity as a crochet hat can? I wanted to join the magic yarn project, but all of their yarn wigs are made of a crocheted hat because they stated that a knit hat is too delicate to string the wig to- so can a knit hat be knit in such a way that it has the structure of a crocheted hat?
Crochet uses more yarn for every stitch, so tends to be more sturdy / stiff / structured and less drapey than knit. Knitted fabric also tends to stretch at LOT when wet, and crochet doesn’t stretch as much. When I blocked my first knit shawl, I was shocked by how it changed when I soaked it! It seemed to double in size just by getting wet, before I had even stretched it out on the mats. Crochet shawls usually change very little.
As to the wigs, I don’t think a knitted base would necessarily be too “delicate” to support the yarn “hair”, but it would be floppy and maybe harder to keep in place than a crocheted one.
I have a great pattern for bathing suit but the size range is rather narrow. I even bought some yarn but haven’t got around to this yet!!
They’re are a few more knit suits in this search. You have to be in Ravelry to view this though
