Knit 1, purl 1 question

I just learned how to knit this weekend and I am starting a new project. The pattern says to K1, P1 and repeat. I know how to knit and purl, but my question is am I supposed to be switching the yarn back and forth each time? I know knit needs it in back and purl needs it in front but switching it every stitch seems like a lot of switching.

Am I doing it right?

Take a look at this page, under ‘basic stitch patterns’ Amy shows how to do ribbing. This will likely be more helpful than trying to describe it. And yes, you do have to switch back and forth for every stitch in K1P1 ribbing but once you get the hang of it it’s not that tricky.
