I promised a Klein bottle hat to my cousin, and I intend to give it to him in two weeks! Anyway, I am looking at the instructions, and I feel like I am in way over my head! I am a little scared… It starts on a larger needle, and I think I am going to use the Emily Ocker pinhole cast on to start. but it just feels complex, there are two layers and grafting- I have never made anything quite like this… I just need your support! Ravelry: Two Klein Bottle Hats pattern by Debbie New
Rather than fiddle with this pattern, I found somthing simpler with a video
Wow, that’s a oner! Very interesting (and complex) construction. Glad you found a pattern but if you ever want to try this one (maybe with no time constraint) we’ll be happy to help.
What hat did you decide on? The bottle hat is interesting for sure. When you’re ready to try it I think you’ll do fine. Just take it one step at a time. The smaller needle is most likely for the bottom edge to make it snug.
Here is the video I found. But after watching it, I fail to see how it turns into a hat- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNHdQHnCdN0
Also, his wife, wants a hat that looks like a curling rock. I found this pattern https://www.knittingparadise.com/threads/curling-rock-hat.149110/ and I actually have all the parts finished, I just need to sew it together, but I was wondering, how do I make the handle look like a handle and not floppy? Do you think that maybe I could (or should) use a pipecleaner along with the polyfil to stuff it properly and give it shape?
At least one of projects on Ravelry for a similar hat mentions using a wire to shape the handle. It seems that over-stuffing and the pipe cleaner combined might just do the trick and give the handle the shape you want.
She turns the klein bottle into a hat right at the very end, starting at 6:44. She puts the tube through the side opening and sews it to the end of the piece. Then she pulls on the tube so part of the hat goes up inside to where the side opening is, making a double-layer hat. It’s quite clever!
So I made the tube at the beginning of the Klein bottle hat with 26 stitches instead of 18, then I proceeded to add stitches until I had 60- but at 60 stitches, there was no way that a head could fit. Honestly, I don’t even think 80 stitches will be enough- I don’t want it huge though, just for an average sized head but with 60, it just seemed like it wouldn’t even fit a doll. Also, at the end, it says I should decrease to 18, which is the number of stitches she started at, so should I decrease back to 26?
What weight yarn are you using? Although the Ravelry pattern uses yarn at 25sts/4inches, the video uses a heavier weight yarn. It could be bulky weight knitting at about 12sts/4inches (60sts would give you about 20 inch around hat.)
Yes, you would decrease to the same number of sts you started with so that you can stitch or graft the two ends of the small tube together.
I am using 4 for weight, I wouldn’t call it worsted, it is Lion Brand Heartland yarn. It feels like it is about a 3 though. I am going to add more stitches per row and hopefully I can quickly get to the desired stitch count.
Heartland lists at about 16sts/4inches. At that gauge 60.sts will give you 15inches around. That’s too small for an adult hat. If you increase to 80sts that will give you about 20inches around.
It’s such a clever construction and a cozy hat.
So, I changed to a chunky yarn and started over- it is looking good, though so far I just have a small tube
Good luck with it. I can’t wait to see a photo!
