King Cole Pattern 4736 error or what?

I have 79sts on needle and worked the 2 pattern rows here -

3rd row - K7 (yfwd, S1, K1, psso, K6) 8 times, yfwd, S1, K1, psso, K6.

4th row - purl

5th row - K5 (k2tog, yfwd, K1, yfwd, S1, psso, K3) 8 times, K2tog, yfwd, K1, yfwd, S1, K1, psso, K5.

Can’t fathom this out. I don’t seem to have enough sts to do the repeat patt sts 8 times. I’d need 120 sts to be able to complete this pattern, wouldn’t I?

Does anybody have any ideas, I mean is this a mistake in the pattern itself OR is it me? It could be. :innocent:
I’ve sent this to King Cole but no reply yet.

Any small smattering of help would be appreciated - thank you.

Welcome to the forum!

There does seem to be a mistake in row 5 but it adds to the stitch count.
5th row - K5 (k2tog, yfwd, K1, yfwd, S1, K1 ,psso, K3) 8 times, K2tog, yfwd, K1, yfwd, S1, K1, psso, K5.

Otherwise the rows seem correct.
The repeat in parentheses is 8sts. The sts before and after the repeat total 15sts. Remember that the yarn forward (a yarn over) doesn’t use a stitch. You simply bring the yarn to the front between the needles and then over the right needle to the back.

Thanks for your welcome salmonmac and your help. No I wasn’t counting the yfwd.
Third row, in parenthesis I’ve corrected the knit stitches to 8 rather than 6 (sizing, my mistake)

I’m going by how many stitches I have on needle, 79, I did do these rows but had to undo and so now doing it in my head.

3rd row - ten sts in parenthesis to repeat 8 times plus the other 15 sts to be worked at beg and end…well over 79 sts…

5th row - now this may be okay because obviously I’m going to be losing some sts in 3rd thru psso…am I right there salmonmac?

So it has to do with 3rd row.

AAAHHH! OMG! I think it’s me that’s wrong - just seen I’ve ringed off the wrong size in row 3.

Salmonmac, I’m going to do these rows again taking into account my error hee hee and I’ll be back to let you know the outcome…this may take some time.
Thought I was going to have to resort to all st st but we’ll see.

Oh I am sorry about this Salmonmac but no I hadn’t ‘ringed/rung’ the wrong size, it is as it stands…I think I need something stronger than coffee.
I’ll try yet again

Well, we could all use a double espresso right about now!
Count up the sts in the repeat to make sure the math works before you re-knit. As given it’s
(yfwd, S1, K1, psso, K6) 8 times
S1 is stitch one
K1 is stitch 2
K6 is stitches 3-8

When you finish the repeat (one increase and one decrease) you’ll have 8sts per repeat.

Well, salmonmac, I’ve got an idea this has been cracked! You helped tremendously by reminding me about the amount of sts in parenthesis x 8
Now although I knew what I was supposed to do, I have an idea I carried on regardless and knitted the first 7 sts in with the para sts throughout the row and so when I got to the end, it was all up the wall.
I’ve gone over the pattern yet again and suddenly, out of the blue, the number of sts are adding up correctly…for rows 3 and 5. (79sts)
How can this be, you may be wondering…I know I am when I’ve been over it a thousand times
The pattern does have one mistake though and that’s saying to do a purl row when it should have been a knit, consequently I have a stand-out row just above the rib. Should I undo yet again? Yes, I expect I will, else it’ll eat away at me.

Thank you so much salmonmac, you’ve been a huge help to me. Hope you find time to enjoy a bit of sun today :sun_with_face:

I get the count with no problem, but now let’s see if I can explain it. Inside the parentheses you k2tog and do a yfwd – that’s two sts, then k1 yfwd --two more sts, so now have four, S 1 and psso – only one total stitch here because the psso isn’t a stitch to count – total now five, then k3, and that gives you a total of 8 inside the parenthesis. That 8 done 8 times equals 64. Outside the parentheses you’re working similarly, but only gaining 5 sts. Add the K5 at the beginning + 64 from the parentheses + 5 outside the parentheses, plus the K5 at the end and you still have 79 sts. Placing stitch markers between each group might help, but since your groupings change from row to row, that might be more confusing. I know – clear as mud, right? I can see it in my mind, but can’t figure out a better way to explain.

Hi justfriends, thanks very much for your imput.

I realised eventually that I had inadvertently been adding the k sts at the beginning to those in parenthesis and gone blindly on without thinking.
I knew what I was supposed to do but for some reason I just didn’t do it.

Thanks again.

So glad you could decipher what I was saying! Glad it’s all sorted out now. Hope the rest goes smoothly.
